BC Marans laying lighter brown eggs?

Our French black copper Marans, Belle, stopped laying, (or so we thought), however I discovered her in the nesting box for almost 2 hours the other day. The result was a lighter brown egg. This egg of course could have belonged to a couple of our other girls. Do the Marans eggs get lighter as...

    Wet butt

Ok so we’ve been raising a small backyard chicken flock for a while, but I am no expert. What probiotics would you recommend exactly? And to get her dewormed, do I need to go to an avian vet? Or Is this something we can do?, And What is Vent Gleet? And how to treat? You’re speaking in language...

    Wet butt

Mathilda is a 2 1/2 year-old Bielefelder. She is fed Purina layer pellets as a regular diet, and bit of scratch every morning. Treats.mostly consist of mealworms and kale. She still has a healthy appetite, however, has not laid any eggs for a couple of days. When I just came out to take the...

    Wet butt

Our two-year-old bielefelder has had a rather wet butt for the past few weeks or so. She seems normal otherwise. She is eating well, and is still laying eggs. Can anyone give me an idea of what might be causing this? If it is a problem or potential disease, I want to nip it in the bud (or butt)...

    First time broody?

This sounds a lot like what my girl is going through right now. She has stopped laying, seems healthy, seems OK when I pick her up and remove her from the nesting box, and when I put her out with the other hens will eat a bit and drink, and even hang out for a little bit, and then back to the...

How to best break a broody hen?

Thank you this is so helpful! I’ve been doing a lot of reading about broodiness and it was overwhelming me. I’ve heard that Silkies tend to go broody but are so worth it, lol! ;)

How to best break a broody hen?

So I have a lavender Americauna , who has gone broody. She is sitting on unfertilized eggs as we haven’t got a rooster. I am trying to just remove her from the nesting box periodically during the day so that she can get food and water, as she will sit, even after there are no eggs, as we’ve been...

    Molting hen exhibiting strange behavior

On Sunday, she let out a wail (I guess is the best word for it), on three separate occasions. She also continued to tussle with one of the lower chickens. She sounded like she was in pain. Then yesterday, she was eating better, and acting normal. Today she started walking in circles, (although...

    Molting hen exhibiting strange behavior

Our egger has been going through a bad molt and has been miserable. Today when we let her out of the coop she began walking in a small circle and hasn’t stopped for at least 15 minutes now. She has been eating sparingly over the past few days.

Love my hens! Am happy to be here!!

It is so very hard to lose the old. I feel like my chickens are my pets, so I take it very hard when I lose one. Here is Lola, our Buff Orpington, who just passed. She was top of the flock, and what a special hen she was!

Love my hens! Am happy to be here!!

Hello friends! I live in Redwood City, California, and have had backyard chickens for the past eight years. Have just lost a couple of chickens due to illness and old age, so I am adding several new pullets to my flock. I’m always full of questions as every chicken is different! So happy to be...
