Mine love the dry Larvae, and I am sure it's good for them. But in nature it would take lots of effort to catch a spoonful, and it would be just part of their diet. I never give them that sort of treats during the day; I want them to eat their food and scratch for what they can. Only towards...
Thanks everybody. I did hatch this very expensive batch of eggs because the Legbars can be sexed at hatching. Although mine were not all that straightforward; it took several experts. Only 5 hatched, only 2 are pullets, Isadora and Cordelia. In one stage I started to worry they were all...
I now have 4 Cream Legbar pullets, and I would like to know what their breed name means?
My Henrietta and Harriet 8 weeks old. We also have Cordelia and Isadora, they are 10 weeks old and hang around with the d'Uccles.
I took some photos, but they do not really show the differences. The thing is that few weeks ago there were very distinct differences in the Millefleurs. One had huge red comb, one had slightly smaller but very red comb, and 2 had very small girlish pale pinkish yellow combs, and people...
Yes, I will take some photos tomorrow. They have such wide range of combs - both in sizes and colors, that I wonder if i am right about those I think are cockerels.
My chicks are 7 weeks tomorrow. Few days ago I noticed weird strange 3 long feathers on one of the boys' tail. First I thought it's just feather falling out, and it was very difficult to take photo; it's just blends into background. But today I managed to get a shot. Is he turning into...
I believe that there is often one dominant rooster who develops faster, and the others keep their hormones in check. I am about to test this theory; I had one cockerel with much bigger and redder comb, the other boys were so much paler and smaller that not just I, but some friends who are...
I do not know much about CCLs, although I have been learning about them all I could, as I have some of their eggs in my incubator. :)
However, the yellow legs in breeds like Barnevelders are caused by gene that makes the birds able to deposit beta-carotene in their skin. However, they need beta...
I bought couple of hygrometers/thermometers and they were all few degrees off each other. Then I got this on eBay Thermopro TP157, 2 Pack Hygrometer. I put the 2 of them on table and they both showed the same temperature and humidity, but just putting my hand near one made the reading...
Good news, the foster broody took the eggs and now we have 8 chicks! That is really amazing, out of 9 eggs flown from 750km away, and then moved to another hen,all 9 hatched
Yes, I had a good look and the chick and shell are gone. I watched the hen all day, and nothing else was hatching, but I got an offer from lady nearby to bring the eggs to her broody hen, and that is what I did. I gave Paloma 4 plastic eggs, for time being. Now the question is, when the real...
last year our Paloma was repeatedly going broody, and was very hard to get her stop. It was her 1st season of laying and I thought I will wait till this year to give her some fertile eggs to hatch. I got her 9 Belgian d'Uccle that I paid fortune for, and they are due to hatch now - day 21 is...
I knew somebody who had 3 Barnevelders, all 3 laying, but one of them has such huge wattle and comb that people kept arguing with her it's a rooster! I would not give up on her as yet. Not unless there will be boy saddle feathers and he starts crowing. But then one of my Polish who laid for...
They all start with small pale combs and wattles, and the boys start color up earlier; pullets only go red when they are POL. Boys on average will have bigger combs and wattles, but there are some girls that can have as big combs and wattles as some boys, who comparatively have smaller combs...
It is very likely that the auctioneer knew it was a cockerel; they work for their client not the buyers. I once bought dozen of cockerels from market :) Fortunately we lived in the country, and paddock full of rooster was not a problem.
Pullets do not have such big red comb or wattle.
