    Rooster injured, now lame

I give him some of the complete pellet henfood, an organic expensive feed, but he doesn't go for it very much. He prefers the whole grains and anything else to that! I've been giving him greens (since he's been more confined) and meat sometimes, so he gets a pretty good range of food I reckon...

    Rooster injured, now lame

He loves his bit of wet cat food. He doesn't get it all the time, just as a treat.. And the dried mealworms are 50+% protein. You may be onto something if he has a bit of nerve damage. I'll try some B vits. Thank you.

    Rooster injured, now lame

Hi Nuthatch, Thanks for your reply. No I haven't given him B vitamins. I've just been giving him plenty of protein (catfood and bugs) and Vit E alonside his usual mixed grain and fermented grain. Is it that the B vits help his nervous system, or do you recommend them for some other reason?

    Rooster injured, now lame

Hello, My silkie rooster Leonardo charged a fence and was hanging upside down by one leg when he was found. Since then he has been very wobbly on his feet. We kept him inside in a pen next to his girls to give him a rest from the stress of looking after them and to allow his injury to heal...

    Swollen silkie rooster walnut comb

Some puffiness and swelling now coming out around the comb and near his eye. He's still eating but was shaking his head a lot, and still not going out with his girls, so I took him to the vet this morning. It is an infection alright. He's now on antibiotics in his water for a week. Hopefully...

    Swollen silkie rooster walnut comb

My 4 year old silkie rooster's comb has become very big and swollen looking over a week or so. He had a fight through the fence with another rooster but I didn't notice any damage to his head. Is it normal for the comb to grow very quickly or do you think this is swollen and an infection of some...

My husband reckons that they will sort it out, and as long as they aren't evenly matched, that one will back down and become more submissive, get out of the way etc, as long as they have enough space. But I'm not so sure 😬

    Multiple mammas?

We have allowed 3 clucky Silkies to sit on eggs, after losing some of our little flock to a predator. They swap around on the nests. Is this a problem? Do they have to create a bond with their eggs/chicks and stick with one nest of eggs to do so? Or will they all want to mother all of the...

    Possible lonely rooster

I separated my 3 youngish roosters who started fighting. I've given them individual sleeping boxes and space, but they seem lonely. I'm thinking of housing them together again at night for more warmth, then separating them in the morning when I open up. Do you think they will fight in a dark...

    Possible lonely rooster

Would he do better if there was a fence between him and the others. That way he can be close to the girls but without the other rooster getting to him? We have 3 extra roosters at the moment. They sidle up to the fence and 'hang out' near the girls. It seems to keep them happy. You mentioned...

Comment by 'Katieclucker' in article 'What to Do When Your Roosters are Fighting and How to Care for Them Afterwards'

Thank you for this informative article. I now have 4 roosters after raising a clutch of silkie chicks. I separated the 3 young roosters from the flock because it was too much for the young ladies, who already have the (father) rooster. The 3 boys were in their own batchelor pad with plenty of...

Silkie cold and putting head under wing

Thank you. Her poop is pretty normal. A bit on the soft side but no evidence of parasites. We've taken your advice and separated the adolescent roosters from the girls. That's been no trouble as they are free ranging side by side during the day. Minnie brings her head out now a lot of the time...

Silkie cold and putting head under wing

My 5 month old silkie did not join her flock this morning. I checked her and she felt a little cold so I put her in a sunny spot. She's now got her head under her wing. Is it normal for hens to put their head under a wing during the daytime? It suddenly got cold last night and the young...
