My Plymouth Rock hen named Jelly (the one in my profile picture actually) has decided to sit on a couple of my barnyard mix’s eggs. Jelly unfortunately has scoliosis, so I will not be allowing her to hatch out her own eggs, just because I don’t want the deformity to be passed down.
I am just...
If you treat them like pets, they produce better eggs ^^ cuddles and snacks make them feel more comfortable, and increases egg production! Of course you don’t have to do any of that if you don’t want to, but they do make great pets if your daughter wants to cuddle them every once in a while.
Usually, my BO is pretty consistent with laying, even as it gets colder. Right now, she’s starting to molt, so her production has gone down a lot, but she would normally give me 4-6 eggs per week. She has gone broody a couple of times, but she’s not mean or anything. She was pretty easy to break...
Yeah, they do often take breaks, and some are longer than others. If you are concerned that the baby has given up, I would suggest assisting. If you will see occasional movement, even if there are a few minutes in between movements, it usually means the baby is just tired. Bringing yourself into...
They will be pretty small peeps, so you would need to be pretty close to hear them if your incubator is loud haha. I could hear mine from a good ten feet away when they really got going inside their shells, but that’s probably just because my house was dead silent when they started to hatch. You...
I would still recommend checking between 12 and 24 hours from now. You will probably hear some noises within the egg that will indicate that the baby is starting to poke its way through, so definitely listen for those! My babies started peeping about 24 hours before they hatched
Slight wobble is okay at this point. The baby should be in position now, and is likely just trying to break through the membrane of the egg. I would keep an eye on the egg just in case, maybe check in on it in another 24 hours.
It takes around 12-36 hours for a baby to externally pip after...
I would suggest very carefully candling the egg, check for signs of internal pipping and movement. I’ve seen mixed reviews on safety holes as well, but I think I’ve seen more good reviews than bad ones on here. I would certainly look into it more if I were you. Research is the most important...
Welcome to BYC!! We are very happy to have you 😁 I am an Orpington lover, got one named Biscuit. They are the best! I hope they love you well like mine loves me
I would recommend leaving the eggs alone as the babies get into proper position to hatch. Give them time, when I was hatching my chickens (which are supposed to hatch around 21 days), half of them took about 24 extra hours to even start pipping. Most of them hatched on day 22. Just leave them...
I’m so sorry you lost him. I can tell that you loved him lots. I’ve lost a couple of girls to animal attacks, so I know how horrible it is to lose one of your babies. You did the best you could to take care of him, and I’m sure he was very thankful for your presence in his last days. I have a...
Oh my. That is extremely concerning. I have no idea how to care for a chicken with a clipped beak, but by commenting I hope to bring this thread higher up in the recents tab to be seen by someone who does. You are doing a great thing by saving them, and even with reason, the clipped beaks just...
