Life at the Pope House Flock...
I know I just posted, but I came out this morning to something a little unsettling...
So when I went out to clean the coop today, I noticed that part of the wire on the top corner of the run door was pulled off - like something was trying to get in overnight...
Life at the Pope House Flock...
So I am on day 7 or 8 of placing my pullets into the big coop after dark each night. So far, they are yet to put themselves to bed in the big coop..:barnie Plenty of space in there, but they seem content with their dog crate and tarp. :idunno Every night I go out...
Hi all & Welcome to my Chicken Diary!🐔
I’ve been caring for chickens for about 4 years now. I’ve learned so much—and yet feel like I know so little! I’m making this thread to document my flock and my journey as we learn and grow together, and I’d love for you to join us.
A bit about me: To...
They will generally start laying around 16–24 weeks old (about 4–6 months), so yes, around Aug/Sept.
For eggs, expect 4-6/week per bird, so with 3, that would be 12–18 eggs per week total.
Yes ducks lay fairy eggs, but it's not as common as with chickens.
Hope this helps!
It's far too young to tell, but the legs/feet seem pretty thick. I vote cockerel. I'm also seeing that little light spot on the top of it's head - that points to male. Again, you wont be able to tell for quite a while. Usually it becomes pretty clear by 8-16wks.
Edit: It just registered to me...
Honestly, antibiotics would have to come from a vet. Even a regular dog/cat vet can usually prescribe something like amoxicillin or enrofloxacin for chickens, they don’t have to be a poultry specialist. That’s the best route to take for this.
There are things like fish antibiotics people use...
Maybe a reproductive issue? Did a bit of research on it and it could be Egg yolk peritonitis (EYP) - the "fluid swelling" is pretty typical of that.
EYP happens when a hen’s reproductive system isn’t working properly and yolk gets released into the abdomen instead of going into an egg. That...
Honestly, there is no "right" way to do it - just whatever works for you, but if you are looking for ideas, I have one that I love.
If your birds spend most (or all) of their time in a run, you can turn that space into a compost system with almost no work. It sort of like the Deep Litter...
I live in North Idaho, Hardiness Zone 6b, and I have 10 chickens in a roughly 300sq ft run in my backyard. The walls are like 6ft tall, maybe a little more, with wood pillars for stabilizing and sturdy metal wire for the wall - All that's to say the walls are solid. I am looking for vines or...
So I recently started a thread about how to raise a friendly rooster (link below), and some people thought my "cockerel" looked like a pullet, so I thought I would make a new thread so I can hopefully get some answers...
So, I have a 16wk cockerel (or pullet) named Zuko. When I originally got...
How is she doing today? I hear she made it through the night and is now moving and eating - that's great news! I'd maybe keep her isolated until she is active healthy for at least 24hrs with no symptoms. Good luck!
OP - How can I expect my flock's dynamic to change over the next few months? Will my hen's be less friendly to me? Will adding a rooster reduce overall stress? Make it worse? Is 9 hen's enough for 1 rooster? I bet all these answers depend on the type of rooster I have, but I would love to hear...
Honestly, that scab isn't a big as I imagined. It doesn’t necessarily mean she’s infected, but her lethargy and lack of eating are concerning because those are often early signs of a navel or yolk sac infection, so keep a close eye on her. If you suspect an internal infection, I would call the...
