    Sick Legbar

She last laid day before yesterday (Sunday). Her diet consists of Dumor Layer feed from Tractor Supply, veggies that I throw out into the run and whatever she forages for when she is in the yard. She doesn't feel skinny though she is the smallest bird in my flock.

    Sick Legbar

Good evening! I came home this evening to find my Cream Legbar acting a bit strange. She was sitting by the dust bath while the other girls were moving about the run. Not that that was strange, but she was hesitant to stand. When she did, she wasn't very stable on her feet. She would give me a...

Training Pullets to go to coop

Thank you for the input. I put a light in the coop with a timer to go off after dark. The light seems to be the trick to the pullets going in. The first night they were on the ramp going in as they missed timed the door going down. The second night they were on the roost.

Training Pullets to go to coop

    It's usually 8:00/8:30 when I go out.

Training Pullets to go to coop

Keep them locked in the coop? It is a shared space with my other 4 with no real way to block them off.

Training Pullets to go to coop

I have 2 pullets that were hatched on 6/18/25 that have integrated wonderfully into my small flock. My only issue with them is that they will not go into the coop at night. I have to go out every evening after the sun has set and place them in the coop. I have been putting them just inside the...

    Expanding the flock...

Thank you for your suggestion. I will get them in there today.

    Expanding the flock...

I live in NC so the night time temps are no issue. My run is predator proof and has a metal roof so they would be protected from rain as well. As for the coop, it is 4x8 but would be a tight fit to put a medium dog crate in.

    Expanding the flock...

How would you do this? Should I put them in a dog crate inside the run during the day and then back in the brooder at night?

    Expanding the flock...

I recently added 2 new pullets (hatched 5/14) to my 2 older hens. I currently have 4 more (hatched 6/18) that I will be adding to my flock in the next 2 - 3 weeks. When is the best time to introduce my younglings? How old should they be? My run is plenty large (128sq/ft) to house a few...

    Is Pine Dangerous to Chickens?

Thank you for the input. I think I may be sticking with pine shavings. One last question though? What are thoughts on the fine pine shavings rather than the larger?

    Is Pine Dangerous to Chickens?

I have just completed a new coop for my girls with plans to add to the flock. In researching bedding for the coop, I had planned on sand but am not completely sold, I found an article on Pine Bedding being toxic. See link below. I am open to suggestions as I am looking for the safest for the...

When do Wynedottes & Sussex' start laying?

I have a Speckled Sussex & Silver Laced Wyndotte that are roughly 27 weeks. When should I expect them to start laying? The Wyndotte's comb & wattle are dark red. The Sussex is a lighter shade.

Still sleeping in nesting boxes, should be laying soon...

Thank you for all the input. As much as I want to add on to the coop, that just isn't feasible right now. I was looking at adding more roosting space yesterday as I was cleaning the coop.

Still sleeping in nesting boxes, should be laying soon...

There is actually room for 3 birds comfortably on the roost. It's a 2 foot roost that is a foot off the back wall giving 3 feet of roost space. There are also roosting bars on the nesting boxes which are higher than the floor of the boxes (if that matters). And yet, they all insist on sleeping...

Still sleeping in nesting boxes, should be laying soon...

I know the coop is a little small for the birds. I have plans on expanding it. My only question to this would be that if it is too cramped, wouldn't they respond differently? I mean they are cramming themselves into a nesting box that is 10" wide X 15" long X 20" deep?

    My coop is 3ft x 3ft. I have 4 girls in the coop. 2 Mille Fleur (~16wks), a Speckled Sussex & a Silver Laced Wynedotte both ~19wks.

Below is a link to the interior of my coop before my girls moved in. I'm trying to get one of them in the nesting box. https://www.backyardchickens.com/account/th-attachment-manager/3838089/view

I've been trying but right now the system won't let me upload any pics. I'll keep at it.

Still sleeping in nesting boxes, should be laying soon...

I wish that all those were the issue. My roosting bar is the highest point in the coop. They spend plenty of time on the bar in the afternoon but at night they will all cozy up in one box. I have seen the older birds on the bar with the youngers, so that is not an issue. The older girls seem to...
