    Raising chickens with children

By "throughout the week," I meant symptoms started I think Sunday, peaked Monday, but has improved everyday after. Not sending my kid to the doctor if I'm seeing improvement and he's acting fine otherwise. It was definitely a mistake to put the brooder in the kitchen in the first place. Chalk...

    Raising chickens with children

I don't even know if it is salmonella. Could be something he caught from school. It's just weird that he seems normal except for the diarrhea in the morning. Until recently, the brooder was in the kitchen, about 15 ft from where food prep happens. I did my best to keep the area clean, added an...

    Raising chickens with children

I am curious the precautions others take when letting their children handle chickens. I am also a little embarrassed by my situation, so please be kind. I think my 5yo son contracted a minor case of salmonella from the chickens. This is my first year and I primarily got a few chicks as pets for...

How close are my chicks to being fully feathered?

The one time I felt comfortable getting outside for a few minutes, it was a hassle rounding them up one by one. I was only able to transport 3 of them. They are currently in an XL wire dog crate that requires two people to carry and just barely fit through my house doors, so I can't take the...

How close are my chicks to being fully feathered?

Buff, wyandottes, barred rock, and white plymouth rock I think the white one is a little younger and is behind the others in getting all her feathers.

How close are my chicks to being fully feathered?

I'm itching to get them out of my house and into their chicken tractor. We've had a lot of cold, rainy days here in PA, but temps are expecting to go up in the next week with still some rain in the forecast. That being said, I've only brought 3 of the chicks outside briefly in the past week. I...

Chicks sneeze within the first few minutes of being outside 1st time

Is it anything to worry about? I haven't noticed it again since bringing them back inside.

Chicks sneeze within the first few minutes of being outside 1st time

This is an old post, but I am having the same issues! I brought 3 4-week old chicks outside for the first time and within a few minutes, they started sneezing! They are just on untreated grass outside.

4-week old chicks are eating cardboard in brooder

They have since lost interest. It only lasted a few minutes but it happens multiple times a day. I moved the mirror to cover up the cardboard hole they were pecking at so maybe that change itself will also keep things a little interesting for them.

4-week old chicks are eating cardboard in brooder

I have five 4-week old chicks in an XL wire dog crate turned brooder. The inside walls are mostly lined with cardboard. Recently they started pecking at it. They were going really hard at one spot this morning and I caught them actually eating pieces they take off! I've occasionally been...

    Meet my first flock!

Let's see if I can link to my uploaded video in my gallery. Feeding mash to the chickies. The little white plymouth is so spunky!

    Meet my first flock!

Okay, I won't take my Orpington's pecks personally (yet). I could see it being more out of curiosity now that you mention it.

    Meet my first flock!

I hope I don't have any roos. We're not allowed them where I am 😭

    Meet my first flock!

I gave them some mash for the first time in a while and they all came running for that. The white laced is still the most apprehensive about all of it. The white plymouth has the most aggressive peck! It actually hurt a little lol. I decided to feed them with a long spoon shortly after.

    Meet my first flock!

Not the greatest picture. From left to right: barred rock, white plymouth rock, buff orpington, silver laced wyandotte, and golden laced wyandotte. They are about 3 weeks old now. Got them when they were about 10 days old. I decided on different breeds mainly to be able to tell them apart...

Tips for minimizing smell and dust in indoor brooder?

I was thinking of putting paper towels down under the bedding. I already have pine shavings, so will be using that. The chicks will be almost 2 weeks old by the time I get them and I think they will already be accustomated to it.

Tips for minimizing smell and dust in indoor brooder?

I'm in Western PA and will be getting about 2-week old chicks this weekend. The temps here are still dipping below freezing so I moved my brooder (cardboard-lined XL dog crate) to one corner of my kitchen far from food prep, but I'm sure I'm still underestimating how smelly and dusty it will be...

    Wheel upgrades for eglu cube.

Did you ever try replacing your wheels? I'm looking to do the same for mine. I have a gravel driveway and an uneven yard I was hoping to move around. I had a very difficult time moving the whole set up out of my garage because of my gravel driveway.

Help me decide: chicks or pullets?

Thanks for sharing! It's really helpful hearing from people who had experience raising both.

Help me decide: chicks or pullets?

Lol your breakdown of the work involved may have got me leaning towards chicks. I was going to fashion an old, large dog crate to use as brooder. I'm only planning on 6 chicks right now and would like to time it so that by the time they outgrow the crate, I can just move them outside. I found...
