We got 6 Golden Comets back in March from TS. We kept them in the house until they were old enough to go outside. We now have hatched 2 Cochin mixes but they are smelling not as pleasant as the GC's. I know I'm doing different this time but I didn't think it would matter as I only have 2 this...
I'm using the small pine chips. We were using the larger chips from TS, but they don't break down as quickly in the compost (so we switched to the smaller).
See! this is why I'm in this group! Thank You for the information. Now, you know you've effectively taken away my excuse to get more Chickens.... I'll just have to tell my wife "oops"... I thought I was replacing the roosters with more hens! LOL Thanks again!
Y'all!!! I appreciate that more than you know! I was almost certain that at least 1 was a rooster. The one with the "White Collar" I was almost certain. Well good! "Vanilla" can make it another day. Thanks Y'all!!!
I had been reading about how Tractor Supply has a tendency to sell Roo’s as Pullets. I was feeling pretty good about our 6 “hens”. We’ve been getting about 3 eggs every day and have been for about a week now. Being a chicken shepherd is a learning process. I knew a little but not a lot…. I had...
Hey y'all, I just wanted to make sure I'm moving in the right direction with my DE and Lime applications. Since we have started raising our girls, we have cleaned out the coop and added lime and DE as a habit. First, I just figured out what that little accordion thing is and I like it!!! I...
It feels like it’s been a long journey since we picked up our girls back in March. We’ve raised them inside, moved them outside in a small coop/run, built a large run and assembled a store bought coop…and bought all kinds of stuff!!! And named them. As we approach July, the time I have...
Getting ready to move the girls and trying to wrap up the building of our run. I have the run built and wrapped in chicken wire. I have intentions of placing 1/4” hardware cloth in the ground about 6” to a Foot in width in the ground at the bottom of the run. Then the remainder of the 4’ width...
I would respond In a couple of different ways that I have found effective. 1- post this to a neighborhood group either or both “Nextdoor” “FB” etc asking if anyone knew the perpetrators. 2- Be in the yard, waiting on them to walk by. 3- if they don’t want by, knock on their door. I prefer #2...
Well yall, posted some pics to the FB to update my friends and family about the girls. Had them in a newly acquired coop and run that we got from a friend. This new addition is for about 3-4 grown birds but I had the 6- 6 week olds out in it to enjoy some sun and fun, and to slowly get them...
and I mis-typed a little bit. I get in a hurry sometimes and I lose my stream of thought. I will eventually need to add. I do realize I'll need to do it a little further out, but I'm a planner. LOL. Plus I think I'm addicted a little bit.
Y'all, I appreciate all the information!!! I'm a planner and I do like to plan ahead and then plan a contingency. My girls are about 5-6 weeks and we are in the process of moving from the brooder box to the outside. I have a 20x10x6 1/2 ft run that we will have to assemble ( chicken wire). I...
We do have some crows around but as the fields and forest become a concrete jungle, we have less and less. We do have a nice family of hawks that hunt the area occasionally. I've always looked at it as a good "sign" like God was smiling at me when I walk outside in the mornings to go to work...
I'm thinking you're probably right. My thoughts were that it may work for a short period, but when that hawk flies over and sees those black chickens long enough, it's going to fly in and get a closer look. To the credit of the TS Chicken Ladies.... It is a good sales tool! LOL!!! I'll...
