Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

We aren't going to do a necropsy this time, mostly due to weather and time this weekend, but if I loose another one I may. I didn't really consider doing one myself since I'm not super familiar with the internal anatomy, but I did find the dissections we did back in school really interesting...

Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

She took a turn Wednesday and started to decline again, refusing food and water. This morning I found she passed overnight. It really bothers me that I have no idea what was wrong. She just... stopped eating and thriving. I do think it was something internal, likely. The other chickens all seem...

Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

New problems - I've now had a single hen in the house for about 10 days. She's recovered pretty much. She's not up to full weight still, but gaining. It's warm inside, it's below freezing at night outside. 1. How do I re-acclimate this hen so she doesn't go into shock when I put her back...

Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

UPDATE: Her appetite comes and goes. I trimmed the feathers around her vent to assist with the accumulation of fecal matter. Sometimes she's got her tail up bust mostly it's clamped down and she's hunched like she's egg bound. Sometimes her fecal matter is super watery, sometimes it's normal...

Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

Update: She’s still pretty lethargic tonight. She’s not interested in pellets but I crumbled some up on another egg and she ate some and drank a little. She’s just had another bum bath and has fallen asleep in the towel in my arms. I’m getting more worried about her. Her skin looks good, though...

Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

UPDATE: She gave me a good scare last night. I got her washed up and dried off and she was way too docile about the whole deal, then just laid down and refused to move in the crate, eat or drink. So I let her be. This morning she devoured a poached egg and the water level is down a little, but I...

Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

@Debbie292d I also wanted to use an eyedropper and nothing I was finding matched how I wanted to use it, so thank you - that was SUPER helpful! I think I was on the right track, and that link confirmed it and added some info I was missing. My only other hesitation now is to dose or not to dose...

Hen loosing weight, messy feathers, pasty - parasites?

I have a polish hen that looked rough yesterday. She's been fine, but I've been watching her, as she seems to have slid down on the pecking order ladder lately. Yesterday she had a wet crest (it was a little rainy, but no one else was wet or muddy), fecal matter built up on her rear, and when I...

    Mycoplasma or Injury?

Well, we may not be looking at MG after all. This was her last night, looking much better. I’m thinking more eye injury at this point, but I thought the foaming around the eye was exclusive to MG? Should I be ok to return her to the flock at this point, or wait a few more days? I’ve been...

    Mycoplasma or Injury?

Update - she's looking good this morning. Eye still a little goopy, minimal crust. Acting normal, no respiratory symptoms. Waiting for the Tylosin to get here, and trying to figure out how to do the testing for now.

    Mycoplasma or Injury?

Thank you for explaining the difference! I think I’m going to continue monitoring and isolating with the neosporin and tylosin, and try the pcr testing. My sister and mom have home flocks too and I really feel like I need to positively confirm if this is MG.

    Mycoplasma or Injury?

This looks like it’s in the same family as terramycin. https://a.co/d/ehqhPzw Would this be better than neosporin? I also found a website where I can send off swabs for respiratory illness testing. Has anyone done that? https://www.zoologix.com/avian/Datasheets/PoultryRespiratoryPanel.htm...

    Mycoplasma or Injury?

Safe to say, Lemon is 0% on board with being a house chicken, but I managed to nab her anyway and get her inside for a better look and some care. Other than her eye being goopy and foamy she looks fine I think. I’ve never had a sick chicken though, so y’all tell me what you see. Both eyes...

    Mycoplasma or Injury?

I’ll try to get a picture in the morning, and maybe a vet visit could be worth it for the script, if more come down with it. Will start a compress and neosporin in the morning.

    Mycoplasma or Injury?

Daft me left my phone in the house when I put the flock up, so I’ll have to get a picture tomorrow, but I noticed today one of my polish hens had some drainage on her feathers where she would tuck her head. I finally got my hands on her and her eye is a tad swollen, watery, a little crusty and...

    Integrating a single rescued hen

Update… all that for naught. Someone took her and several other lone chickens needing a flock, so that was probably best for her!

    Integrating a single rescued hen

I know, I said no more. I had 4. Wanted just two more. Got 5 more. Said no more again. But… there’s a single surviving hen from a lady not far away that needs a new home. Something destroyed her coop and took out all but one mature (no longer laying) hen. I’m thinking of integrating her. She’s...

    Something just took my hen

I tried to last night, but it was already dark. I'll check her again today, if I can get my hands back on her. The rooster was NOT happy with me touching her last night! I watched her eat, drink, scratch around and was acting normal this morning, but I didn't have a chance to catch her...

    Something just took my hen

Crazy thing, she's back and mostly ok! I had my dogs up on the back porch - I was shaving the big guy down (50lbs). He typically patrols the back fence with dedication to the point I have to go GET him sometimes, and he's chased off a few things. But they were locked on the porch for grooming...

    Something just took my hen

Inside and heard the rooster and hens start up and ran out to find one of the hens scrabbling with something at the back of the yard by the fence line. By the time I got down there it was gone. Whatever took her must have cleared the fence with her and only left behind a handful of feathers. I...
