It's me again! In our second batch of the year we got 3 runners and 2 Welsh Harlequins. Here's a picture of the slightly older Welsh we're thinking is a drake. The Welsh were about a week old when we got them so we weren't able to sex them early based off their bills like they say.
Any thoughts...
It's now over 7 weeks and I don't hear any quacks. Just a lot of raspy noises that sound like a bad shopping cart 😅.
Looks like you were right and they're all boys.
I'll try to get a video today. The one that does make the potential quack noise only really does so when we show up in the run for about 20 seconds. Otherwise they're generally quiet.
We happened to be at a poultry sale yesterday morning and as a contingency plan we picked up 3 runners (I think...
I would if they actually made a noise other than the duckling noises 😅. One does the odd time but not frequently enough to get it on a recording this morning.
Thanks for all your input I appreciate it.
Well hopefully one or two surprise or else I'm going to have to rehome all of them when it's obvious they're drakes. They share a run with chickens so I wouldn't want to put the hens health at risk.
Not any obvious quacks like yours. One makes a bit of a honk (herrrr) noise the odd time and has for a couple weeks now. They're still mostly making the beep beep noises like when they were babies.
We've had them since they were 3 days old. They are 5 weeks old today.
We got them from Kijiji (Canadian equivalent to Craigslist). It wasn't from a reputable hatchery so it's possible they're mixed, who knows.
Here are some better pictures.
Thanks for the insight.
Here's a picture from this morning. Not the greatest lighting due to the sun being low but I'll post another later today when I get a better one.
Hey all,
I've attaching a couple pictures of my 5 week old Khakis. I know it is probably too early to tell what sex they are and the first indicator will be their quack/bwep sounds, but I have some questions as well!
Two of the four have darker bills but have slowly started showing a bit more...
They didn't eat much last night but I'm guessing that is because they were a little spooked not being in the actual house. Every time I looked at them through the remote camera that's in their duck house they had their eyes open.
We've been adding brewer's yeast in with their feed since we got...
Hi everyone,
Yesterday we moved our 4.5 week old Khakis outside. It's quite toasty right now where we live although it will be going down to about 13 degrees C at night over the next few days. I'm not concerned that they'll be cold in their house since it's insulated and we are monitoring the...
All the droppings seem to be fine. Haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.
They're still on the chick crumble medicated feed.
We haven't specifically done any checks for lice or mites. My wife holds them multiple times a day and hasn't mentioned anything.
The brooder is about 4 feet x 3...
They came from a hatchery in the area.
Air circulation should be fine. The brooder is in a large room and it's placed in the center.
Haven't seen any eye bubbles yet or crust.
We also haven't seen anyone peck her eyes. However it may be due to staring at them more, but I'm finding two of the...
Hello again,
We have a maran who's around 3-4 weeks old. For about the last 5-6 days she's been keeping both eyes closed the majority of the time. It first started with the right eye being closed and now it's generally both eyes that are kept closed. They don't look swollen and she can open...
Thought I'd bump this with an update.
The sneezes have 98% gone away. We did see another chick with a nose bubble briefly the other day. Everyone seems to be happy and doing well.
However, one of our chicks that's about 3-3.5 weeks old is now keeping her right eye closed almost all the time...
Hello everyone,
I've searched the forum and done lots of googling online and there's a lot of differing information about when to switch ducklings to starter/grower. Right now the ducks are eating unmedicated chick crumble (20% protein) and I add in some brewer's yeast as well. The little ones...
Thanks for your opinion!
Yes we've been putting electrolytes in the water since we got them! I also hadn't noticed a chick having the nose bubble for more than a day. It would seem like the chick(s) start sneezing one day and about a day and a half later they might get the nose bubble, but then...
Hi everyone,
New chick owner here. We picked up our chicks about 2 weeks ago and they ranged from a couple days old to about a week old. Approximately one week ago one or two of the chicks started sneezing. We read online to remove any dusty bedding so we did this first. Sneezing continued and...
