    Best vs Worst coop bedding?

    Right now I am deep litter using wheat straw, shreaded paper and dry stall pellets. It has been very cold -25C and the coop never dips below -5.

    What material should I use on top of the plywood floor of my chicken coop?

    I just used Linseed oil and cover the floor with straw and a sprinkle of stall dry pellets (for horses that absorb moisture and odors) and my floor is just a sweep up after I fork out the straw.

    I have 24 hens. I only track the number of eggs per day. Since free calendars are widely available I use one of those and write my daily total down. That way I can spot surges and dips in the egg laying.

    Five week old chicks not going into coop at night

    When my chickens were young I would turn on the light in the coop. Then chase them in with a stick. Never hit them just used the stick to guide them in or block their exit. It made them realize the coop is the safe place. I had to chase them into the coop every night for a month. And in storms.

    How do you decide what rooster to keep?

    I have 25 hens and kept to roosters who were fine and got along until they reached 1 year. Suddenly the Rhode tried to kill the Barred Rock. It was aweful. So we sent the Rhode to weasel heaven (where bad chickens go). He tasted good though :)
