It doesn't look like you can bank your coop. That is what I do in Canada. Snow is a good insulator. But your coop is raised. If you have electric in the coop put in a red lightbulb (not a heat lamp) to keep them warm.
I hope you don't loose too many plants either. Sorry we accidently sent...
I just used Linseed oil and cover the floor with straw and a sprinkle of stall dry pellets (for horses that absorb moisture and odors) and my floor is just a sweep up after I fork out the straw.
I have 24 hens. I only track the number of eggs per day. Since free calendars are widely available I use one of those and write my daily total down. That way I can spot surges and dips in the egg laying.
My chickens do not like to be handled. They didn't even like it as chicks making pasty butt fun. 😑
And the do not like it now. When I enter the coop they will gather around me because they think I have food. Same when I am shovelling out under the roost. As soon as they see that shovel they...
This is true. I have 24 hens and kept 2 roosters after researching ratios. They were fine until the 12 month when the beta (RIR) tried to kill the alpha (B Rock). The Alpha was better tempered so the beta became supper. The Alpha was gentler to the hens too. He is protective of them so I...
When my chickens were young I would turn on the light in the coop. Then chase them in with a stick. Never hit them just used the stick to guide them in or block their exit. It made them realize the coop is the safe place.
I had to chase them into the coop every night for a month. And in storms.
I have 25 hens and kept to roosters who were fine and got along until they reached 1 year. Suddenly the Rhode tried to kill the Barred Rock. It was aweful. So we sent the Rhode to weasel heaven (where bad chickens go). He tasted good though :)
Did you ever find out what was wrong?
I lost a barred rock 10 days ago one day she was suddenly lethargic and easily picked up (all my hens refuse to be handled) now to day I have another that is staying on the top roost all day. She moves when I try to come near her but is right back up as...
I am so happy that I have avoided all these pit falls my first year of chickens.
We built a small 8x8 fully insulated (including human and chicken door an double pained windows with 4 inches if air space). I ended up with 25 chickens so the coop is tight but in the winter (and we get -40...
Well I think I discovered the issue. I have 2 roosters with my hens and found the Red trying to kill the Rock rooster. The red was being super aggressive. So I sent him to weasel heaven (a beautiful place where good weasels go when they die to chase chickens for eternity. It is where bad...
I have 24 hens and 2 roosters (barred rocks and Rhode Island reds) nearing a year old (may 25 2024). They have laid fairly consistently even through winter 12-16 eggs a day. Now with the winter thaw there are 6-8 eggs a day. The only change I made was mobile fencing around their yard so that...
