How many chicks will you hatch in 2026?

Well I just ordered 14 hatching eggs this morning so looks like I’ll start with that! I ordered salmon faverolle, chantecler, lavender astrolorp and one lone Hmong egg! I have one young rooster, so I’ll also incubate some of my own eggs later in the spring and also let my broodys sit on a few...

How many chicks will you hatch in 2026?

I love silverudds! I’m also hoping to add a few more. I think I’ve decided this is my favourite breed.

    Swedish Flower pullet or cockerel??

Here are mine around 4 weeks, the two on the left were my pullets and the two on the right ended up boys. Looking back, I could see wattles forming on the boys at this age and not on the girls.

    Swedish Flower pullet or cockerel??

I ended up with two hens and I think two roosters, I gave one away before I was 100% sure. The one I know was a boy had a small pale comb but he was larger than the others. Never did ‘act’ like a cockerel and his comb was small and pale for a long time. He was quite a bit larger than the...

Is this a Black Copper Maran?

Very possible she’s not laying yet, marans are late to start laying I find. I just counted weeks and mine that I hatched this year is 37 weeks and doesn’t look as close to laying as yours (yours has very red comb and wattles, mine are still smaller and more of a dark pink). The marans I got...

    Any guesses on genders?

Back one is definitely a boy, I would guess the front one might be too but too early to say for sure.

Help me figure out these mixed breeds!

I also got this girl from the same farm last year, sold to me as a black silverudd. But I have been suspecting she was mixed with ayam cemani as well. Definitely not as much as the one I got this year, as she has the red wattles/comb. But she lays creamy white eggs, not minty green like my other...

Help me figure out these mixed breeds!

Thanks for clarifying regarding the term paint. This rooster had a lot of offspring that looked similar to this girl. Do you think the mother is more likely his offspring from last year (just one hen hatched last year) or a solid brown hen (not sure of the breed, look kind of like isa brown or...

Help me figure out these mixed breeds!

Oh I didn’t mean she is fibro. She’s a complete bym, both parents are mixed! I was looking for input on what breeds people thought she was mixed on. Sorry if I didn’t get the correct terminology in my post, that’s not really what I was looking for input on. I’d love if you explained what paint...

Help me figure out these mixed breeds!

These two are definite mixes, but I’m so curious to know what breed mix you guys think they are. The black one so far is literally all black, maybe a bit of grey coming through on her feet. These two originate from the same farm, it has primarily silverudds and marans (the marans are pure...

Thinking about getting a barn cat

Ok, lots of great info here! I am thinking might not be great to keep barn cat right in with chickens. Which I kind of wondered about to be honest. So, if the mice are all in the coop/run, and the cat can’t get into the run because it’s Fort Knox, is there any point (mouse hunting wise) in...

Thinking about getting a barn cat

I was thinking my set up doesn’t really work, need a big farm where the cats can come and go as they please and place to keep the food away…

Thinking about getting a barn cat

The coop itself is 80sqft. There’s a people door so I can easily go in and tend to the cat if needed. The run, I can’t remember the size, but more than twice that. It’s a decent size. In theory I could get a small seperate space in there with a cat door, but it wouldn’t be insulated like the...

Thinking about getting a barn cat

Hello! I’m thinking about getting a barn cat, to keep the mice at bay. Tell me anything and everything I need to know/consider! Key relevant info: My coop is Fort Knox, there is no in and out. We have too many neighborhood dogs and it’s just not worth the risk, so this cat would live full time...

    Legbar luck!

I just have to share this as I couldn’t believe my luck! I hatched 5 legbar chicks, amazingly 3/5 were pullets! Which is not how my luck has gone with other breeds. And even more amazing is I ended up with one of each type - crele, cream and opal!
