    Integration 2 months in

Well their mini-run within the larger run is open so they are in and out all day, but tend to hang out in there a lot. So should I remove it after adding more food and water? I have two of each but thanks for the tip, I'll add more esp for food! And a separate roost. Thank you!!

    Integration 2 months in

Hi everyone! I read a lot of good info on here about integration and I'd say we are going as well as can be expected. We did see no touch for a couple weeks, babies in cage in the coop for a while, and now for maybe a month they've been coexisting but with this open cage that mostly only the...

    9 week old gender qs

Thanks all!! Yes the Sussex I first thought may be cpckerel bc her comb came earlier, but from what I see online the boys are much bigger and redder by now so I am also thinking Widget is a gal! I was most unsure about the EE. Separate EE question, it doesn't look like she has beard/puffy...

Improving clay soil and cover crop questions

I've read mixed things about alfalfa, mainly the concern being about getting it out come spring. But deep roots would be awesome, I can't imagine anything growing past 3 inches. Which reminds me, do you also recommend just cutting the plants at the soil and letting their root structure...

Improving clay soil and cover crop questions

I like the flipping idea- maybe I'll dig up a layer of the clay and try to put the compost later under it instead of putting it directly on top or rolling it in. For the clover cover crop, in the spring do you till it or just dig it out in bunches and turn it upside down or what? Thank you!

Improving clay soil and cover crop questions

Thanks everyone! Also I found this podcast that others with clay soil may like, I'll post it here if I can. It turns out I've probably been watering too shallow and too frequently. Today I placed a container in the dirt and watered until puddles, then waited 10-15 min, watered until puddles...

Improving clay soil and cover crop questions

Hello all! I have pretty terrible clay soil here in PA that I've sadly been gardening in for 10 yrs, same spot. Tried raised beds for several years, but the soil I purchased was possibly worse than my own, so last year I dug it out. Garden still in same spot bc it's fenced. My research...

    6-8 week Sapphire Gem Roo?

I have 16 week old gems, 1 pullet and 2 roos. I really think it's a pullet. Someone told me that in addition to the barring and redder combs/wattles- roos have the yellow around the eyes, and yellow legs/feet. It seems true in all the pics I looked at one here! You can search my thread and...

    Speckled Sussex

Yours are about a week older than mine it sounds like. Mine was sold as a pullet and I'm praying it's true, but the short tail has me a little worried! Were yours sold as pullets? If so I have hope for us, they can't all 3 be wrong right lol?

    Weak baby chick

Hopefully this is the last update, but little Widget is now 3 weeks old and doing great :) a little smaller/more timid than her 3 fellow chicks but otherwise just like them. Thank you guys so much for your help and support! Best to you and your flocks!

    Weak baby chick

Thank you!! I did try that a little as well- but somehow the night that I wrote my last message 2 days ago she miraculously started pecking and eating like a normal chicken!! Now whenever I check her crop it's pretty full :) I am still giving Nutri-drench 2 drops bid and I'm cautious again bc...

    Weak baby chick

Well she is still awake and much more lively, but not really eating on her well! This may sound weird but the Purina starter/grower seem too large for her. Or else she just isn't interested in it for some reason. She pecks it very rarely compared to the others. I let her be for a bit...

    Weak baby chick

Update: Bitty is doing great tonight! Since around 730pm has been acting like a normal chick- actually running! And pecking at food, drinking water on her own... She was pecking at the syringe like crazy when I gave her egg yolk (shes slower than the others to peck and not eating a lot still...

    Sapphire gem? Hen or roo?

Just to update, chickies are 3 months old now, and Luna (now Coco) and Eggo are most definitely roos! From what I've heard it seems true that clues for Sapphire Gems are that boys have barring, light legs/feet and yellow rings around the eyes. Girls no barring, darker with dark legs/feet and...
