can I convince a duck hen to raise a duckling?

Yes, we are worried about her being lonely. I am just googling about raising one duckling with a few chicks. I've already searched locally for day old ducklings available, and there was nothing at the moment. Just hatching eggs, or ducklings coming soon.

can I convince a duck hen to raise a duckling?

Hi! I have a lone duckling who should, hopefully, be hatching tomorrow (sadly, the other 3 eggs quit). It has pipped already and has done a little cheeping. I have a brooder ready to go. I am wondering though, if I could just put a duck hen in the brooder and stick the pipped egg (or a dry...

Will a non-broody hen raise my incubator chicks?

Hi! I have some chicks who should, hopefully, be hatching tomorrow. One has pipped already and some more are cheeping. I have a brooder ready to go. I am wondering though, if I could just put a hen in the brooder and stick the eggs under her and then she'll raise them? Or wait until they're...

Comment by 'Stacey Adele' in article 'The Deep Litter Method: All You Need To Know'

When you clean out every 3 months, do you remove everything, or leave something so the next round starts composting straight away? Do you have a lot of ventilation? I also have a wooden floor, so I'm wondering how it would work without rotting the floor.

I would also like to know if I can use this for ducks, or rather, in a coop that houses both ducks and chickens. I'm also wondering if works well on a wood floor and doesn't cause the floor to rot?

    processing roosters

Hi Mike, unfortunately I don't know anything about this. I don't know if you would get more response if you created a new post, rather than commenting on this one I started in July? Out of curiosity, how old is 2kg bird in the pic above and was the bird a rooster?

    processing roosters

I just wanted to follow up to my earlier enquiry and say thanks for all the advice and allowing the meat to rest was brilliant! It was tender and delicious. I actually ended up only processing 2, because we had a predator kill or scare several away. I kept 2, against my better judgement and now...

Oh, yum! Carnitas. I'm hungry just thinking of it. Great idea.

best way to treat eggbound duck??

I'm concerned that forcing her into a salt bath will cause her more stress if it isn't necessary (not to mention the several times I've picked her up these last few days to assess, which she isn't accustomed to at all, poor love!). Maybe I'll hold off if it's totally normal for her to not be laying.

best way to treat eggbound duck??

She gets as much feed as she wants and free ranges all day on land and in the river (they mostly choose the river). For a couple of weeks she was getting grower feed along with my younger birds but not their on 2/3 laying pellets and 1/3 grower feed. I don't know if she is molting... I've...

best way to treat eggbound duck??

Hello, I have a one year old white layer hen (I think, I've had her about a month). She has consistently laid an egg most days, although she seemed to skip a day every several days. Also, they free range a lot, so there were a few times I didn't think she was due to miss a day, but I assumed I...

introducing new hens to the flock

There is a currently a step ladder in the run for them to hang out, and a couple of logs, but no hidden spaces. We do have some pallets that we could lean against the walls and adding extra feeding stations would be easy. I've heard they also like to forage for food so we could toss some around...

introducing new hens to the flock

Our coop is 8'x10' and the run is 8'x16'. There are also 4 roosters that aren't staying longer than another week or so, and 4 ducks that are staying. They were completely free range outside the run until a week ago when we lost several chickens when there was nobody home during the day. Now we...

    Coffee grinds for duck bedding?

Does anyone have experience with coffee grinds for duck bedding? I have a coop for chickens a few ducks. I've created a shelf under one of the roosts to hold coffee grinds and it is DREAMY for ease of cleaning up their poop! I have assumed that I can't put coffee grinds on the entire floor (or a...

introducing new hens to the flock

We have 5 hens that are 3 months old. Out of 24 eggs we got only 7 hens and we have now lost 2 to a predator. :( I'm thinking of introducing 3 or 4 new hens but don't want to create a giant hassle for myself with birds not getting along. I read that it's best to introduce a few at a time...

I should have mentioned they are a BYM. Laying or multi-purpose. None are specifically meat birds.

    processing roosters

Hi everyone, I am finding this site invaluable. Thanks to everyone for sharing knowledge. We are new to chickens and hatched 19 live chicks in May. They are 8.5 weeks now. Turns out more than half are roosters. This is fine because I wanted in the range of 6-10 hens. I thought we could eat the...

please help with new hatchling advice

How much space does a momma duckling need when confined with her ducklings? If it's more than a brooder size, then this is the best I can do (without completely separating them).

please help with new hatchling advice

We have a waterer for hatchlings that we used for both chicks and ducklings this spring. And I put stones around the base so the ducklings can't drown in the half inch of water. I'm just worried mama will tip it. I've put the ducklings with their momma, as well as the other 2 birds she came here...

please help with new hatchling advice

If ducklings stay with mom, how do they even have a safe water source that she won't knock over?
