Barred Rock Hen not laying, lethargic, puffy feathers

ETA: she has a bad smell coming from her mouth and her crop is soft and squishy. I know for sour crop people withhold food but she’s already so skinny I hate to do it.

Barred Rock Hen not laying, lethargic, puffy feathers

Hello all, I have a 2-3 year old barred rock hen who is not acting like herself. She is lethargic (often stands still) with a hunched posture, has diarrhea (couldn’t get pic but it was watery and light green), and has not been laying. I checked her for mites and lice but I couldn’t see any...

2 Yr Old Barred Rock: lethargic, sleepy, no eggs

Thank you for your detailed reply!! I’ll try to get pics tomorrow. She was much more active today!! I only caught her laying down once and I think it was to cool off. When I checked her crop it felt normal to me but I will check again tomorrow morning. Per your rec., I gave her the calcium and...

2 Yr Old Barred Rock: lethargic, sleepy, no eggs

Yeah…rotten almost, like if someone has a decaying tooth. Not “yeasty” per se. What should I do for sour crop? Isolate and withhold water and food for 24 hrs?

Her crop feels squishy. I just checked. This is day 2 of the Corid.

2 Yr Old Barred Rock: lethargic, sleepy, no eggs

Yes — should I stop the Corid though since I know vitamins interfere with its efficacy? Also, I just picked her up and got a whiff of her face, which was pretty terrible-smelling. So, maybe Coryza? I haven’t notice her sneezing and no foamy eyes or nasal discharge either 😕

2 Yr Old Barred Rock: lethargic, sleepy, no eggs

What: 2 year old barred rock Symptoms: no eggs except two fairy eggs last week. It has been hot here (90s) as summer comes to end. I have been misting their run, which stays cooler. I thought the no eggs was due to heat. Yesterday, though, I noticed her sleeping standing up and when I picked...

    Hen sudden death

I’m sure we do have weasels here but I’ve never seen any evidence of them on our property! I looked up their killing strategies and it seems like suffocation would be possible…though I don’t know what to make of the fluid unless it naturally leaked from decomposition. I also thought that a...

    Hen sudden death

Hello, First, thank you to everyone on this page. You have supported and helped me throughout my chicken-keeping. I appreciate you all! Now onto the hard part… I had a bantam Cochin (undetermined age; I bought her from someone)who was recently broody. She had three eggs she was laying on...

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

Thank you for trying to help…after I posted last, I woke up in the morning and she kept sagging her neck downward, wouldn’t eat or drink, and slept for the majority of the day. She had been struggling with this illness for weeks and I couldn’t stand to see her quality of life so compromised so I...

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

It’s like her whole body and neck is flaccid. She still eats what I had to her (it takes a few tries for her to get it, though). I just don’t know what to do.

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

Here is a new video of her on a rubber mat. I also clipped her nails but she still wants to put her legs out to balance herself it seems. As of now, I’ve cut back the vitamins to only B complex and E, so as not to make her sick from overdoing it.

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

After more research on this site, I decided to just go ahead and clean her ears with hydrogen peroxide to see if that helped at all, even though I didn’t see any wax buildup or pus. When I cleaned her left ear though the peroxide bubbled. Sign of ear infection? This site recommends polymixin b...

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

This may seem like a silly question but if they’re the gel capsules, how do I crush them up? The vitamins I have are the gel ones and I’ve been splitting them and then putting the contents in the mash.

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

If she isn’t doing the “stargazing” could it be early stage wry neck? Which b complex do you recommend? I checked both her ears and crop—ears seem clear and crop is empty. I have been administering the vitamins by putting them in a small amount of mash and making sure she eats it all—I’m scared...

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

How long is too long to give vitamins? That’s was another concern I had. Thank you for your reply! I will change my vit e and selenium to iu400 and scrambled eggs. She is currently on a high protein layer feed. I believe 19%. And yes, she has oyster and grit in a separate dish.

    Bantam staggering head bobbing

Hello. It’s been one week since I found my one year old bantam Cochin bobbing her head and acting dizzy (literally looked like the camera shot from Hitchcocks Vertigo). She has since been staggering a bit when she walks but doesn’t fall down. Just seems unbalanced. I have her quarantined...

Broody Bantam Cochin Hen & Resp Infection?

Okay. Thank you for the information. How should I ensure she’s drinking it? I will take your advice about breaking her broodiness. But I am worried that her being sick will make her not want to drink much water. I know that many suggest putting apple juice in the medicine solution so it doesn’t...
