    In a quandry.

I am based in Scotland and I have got 4 silkies who were all hatched by me and all live together happily. 2 males and 2 females, they are 6 mths old and they all stay together and move as one. If one does randomly walk away the others will follow or they will run back to join the others when...

    Feeling sad

His behaviour towards me seems exactly as his behaviour he does for the hens. He does the dance then starts scratching at the floor, tapping it and chittering to the girls. That's exactly what he does to me by my feet. It doesn't seem aggressive.

    Feeling sad

I know on the hottest days in the summer thecastro can have abit of a hum from the dogs urine more than poop and I usually pressure was then disinfect monthly but this year due to my health determination and recovery from a car crash I had not done this but even then it was not bad constantly...

    Feeling sad

I pick up their poop daily, with a brush and pan set which goes into a bin. I now pay a man to collect this bin and disinfect the turf fortnightly so I'm hoping this helps. With regards to the chickens, I'm not sure I could give one away as they are both so special, I got silkies to be pets...

    Feeling sad

I'm feeling sad as I don't know what I am going to do? I got 6 silkies eggs to incubate May and four beautiful babies hatched. I love them so much and they are beautiful. They are now 5 mths and are outside in my garden. It turns out I have 2 roos and 2 hens. One roo is the dominant roo and I...

Finally finished and got some lodgers.

I currently have 4 but am planning to add some polish and silkies in the spring when the breeder will have them available. Chicken math is a nightmare lol, unfortunately I won't have any more space once I've pushed to 10 max. I'd need to move to a bigger garden/house if I want more than that.

Finally finished and got some lodgers.

Well it's taken my dad and me nearly 4 mths to finish the coop, but I am so proud of our achievements. Both of us are mobility disabled and have conditions that cause us to be in constant never-ending pain, so this task was huge for us and why it took us so long as we needed recovery days...

    Ventilation

Hi No it's my coop in my garden but dad is helping me build it and he has his own ideas of what it should be like. He's 79. I keep telling him this is what I've read, this is the minimum requirements etc so he is listening to me when I can provide reasons for the changes to his plans. We have...

    Ventilation

Hi The windows are approx 14in x14ins they could be left open all the time as I'm putting hardcloth over the opening. I originally was going to do the apex as ventilation but dad felt it was overkill. I also thought about putting two vents along the bottom near the floor the plastic slatted...

    Ventilation

Will this be enough ventilation for Scottish weather? There will be a 2in.gap front and back of the coop. Plus two opening windows. The coop is 7x6ft. will I need more or less? The roof will be a corrugated metal roof. Eventually there will be 4 standard chickens and 4 bantam ones. I...

Hi I'm almost done building my coop and will be looking to purchase my chickens soon. Stupid me decided to get family involved in picking what chickens to get and come up with a list that I think will all get along. Had to make a couple of changes to what some had chosen as on paper they could...

The chicken wire is Mesh size: 25mm x 25mm, 1.1mm thick wire; I had planned on using 1/4in hardware cloth but people say use the 1/2in and i was planning on 6inchs down into ground and 12 inches skirt onto ground then another 12 -24 inches along bottom of run aswell as the chicken wire. Hardware cloth and chicken wire.

I know that's there's hawks, foxes, badgers, owls, and rats. Possibly weasels, stoats and mink. The roof will be completely chicken wire covered and a section will also be tarped to provide a dry area.
