Hi,
I know it’s said that if you plan to keep poultry, be prepared to cull. I just can’t. I get too attached to these birds. A chick seemed to hatch with some kind of respiratory problem and seemed uncomfortable. I thought about taking him to the vet to euthanize him. I’ve taken one of...
I came across a guy selling eggs from white quail, but he never mentioned what kind they were… it was just a picture of a white bird, and looked like my white buttons do…kinda.
I asked, and he doesn’t know. He sent me this picture. Obviously not a button quail. Is it a coturnix? I told...
shuffles (and the other white roo) weren’t at all interested in any colored hen. I was going to supervise one of my plump, healthy hens with Shuffles. He was constantly crowing and thought maybe he needed a “release.” He acted as though she didn’t exist. The other white roo did the same...
She still isn’t really moving or eating or drinking. She’s a completely different bird now… very anxious. When she’d see me before, I’d say her name, and she’d run close to me in her enclosure and seem so excited. Now she won’t move. She’s lost a ton of weight. I’ve been feeding her as much...
I just learned this the hard way. A once-docile button roo scalped his hen on a dime, in the middle of the shoulders (?) too. She looks so bad. Not eating, not drinking, terrified of leaving her teepee hiding space even though she’s alone in there. I can’t place a rooster because there’s no...
I finally hatched three white buttons! I thought they were one roo and two hens since the roo was mating the other two birds, sexy dance and all.
I woke up to find the hens each with a bloody ear, and assumed it was ear pecking by the roo, so I moved him. “Pinky” the hen began laying eggs...
I’m guessing once it starts, the site of red makes them want to continue… or someone’s an aggressor…? Well, I’m sure she’s female now. There’s an egg in the isolated box.
The other two were quiet all day. Her removal didn’t seem to bother them.
You’re the expert… how do I handle this? 😢
I woke up to find a bloody, scabby ear hole on one of my favorite button quail, Pinky. I washed it with warm water (accidentally removed the scab), and tried to clean the blood off, and tried to dab a little ointment. I have her in her own space now. She was living in a trio of white quail...
Had 11 button quail eggs hatch today. The last one hatched with a bloody, thick stringy thing coming from the umbilicus. I didn’t see the yolk sac, but I may have noticed yolk on the side of the body as I was ringing him off after hubby put him in the brooder, and got the stringy thing covered...
Here are mine. I assume the white chicks are called whites. I assumed these were a black tux male (but he has blue hues too), a wild type female(?), silver/grey tux (m), and my conjoined birds. Just kidding… they always sleep butt to butt like this. One is a gray male with some pastel colors...
what color is this? Still a chick, but it looks like some button superhero with the yellow swirls around the eyes.
I also hatched what looks like will be a trio of whites a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful! Really hope there’s a roo and a hen in the group, but I tend to have bad luck. They...
That’s good to know! I have people coming to pick up chicks tomorrow. They’ve been waiting a few weeks for this hatch. Thank you so much for being so responsive…you’ve been incredibly helpful! I’ve only kept 3 pair of buttons for about 8 months. Any eggs I hatched were from my own hens and...
What is a chick chair, btw?
I get very attached, almost from the moment they hatch. They’re so sweet. I’ve had to deal with a few button chick deaths this week, and I always cry. I’m sorry to hear of the losses.
