Adjusting Chickens to a New Home

We just completed a cross country move and used electrolyte additives and probiotics in the water during the move and for the past 2 weeks after. Our girls free range in a fenced in, 1 acre area with trees some brush and bramble patches but mostly grass, in both the old house and the new one...

    Traveling cross country

We had someone come to the house to do the testing then ask we had to do was carry it with us. Very simple but kind of expensive. The first week in 100 degree temps was rough. Kept air-conditioned coop at 79... then 80... then 85...I go out every 2 hours to give water and treats to keep hydrated...

    Traveling cross country

We made it! Not a single casualty or illness in either the chicken flock or the parrot flock. It was a truly horrible and exhausting drive, but we took every possible precaution and the friends and family we stayed with along the way took such great care of our girls that the stress was kept to...

    Onyx Olive Egger?

Not yet. Mine aren't expecting until September but I hope they look like yours! So pretty. Hoping they don't hide them in a bush... those are camouflaged well!

Chick crumbles not ok for adult chickens?

Wow! This is so good to hear. My Trouble (2 year old) had a very hard moult last year and then yesterday she shook her feathers... and her tail fell off. Based on all of y'all stories here I've switched all my hens to starter grower with oyster shell on the side. It's so much easier than...

Comment by 'Lizzyduff' in article 'Southern Heat: Ways to keep your flock cool in the summer.'

Thank you for this! We will be moving from Seattle to Louisiana in just over a week, with our flock. I will use all of these methods to do whatever I can to keep them comfortable and help them adjust to the new normal.

    Onyx Olive Egger?

Oh my goodness they're so pretty 😍 My wee girl looks just like them but younger. Do yours also have a touch of iridescent on their back when the sun shines right on them?

    Onyx Olive Egger?

Oh my goodness the wee ones with the crest look just like mine. I'm so happy to see they will probably keep the crest. It's adorable to see it go up with her emotions. Such a cutie, and very cuddly, outgoing and SO SOFT.

    Traveling cross country

Thank you! Makes me feel better. I traveled from Oklahoma to Alaska with a cockatiel... from Alaska to Washington, through Canada with TWO cockatiels... and that stress is NOTHING compared this! 😆 🤣

    Traveling cross country

As a microbiology major i have no excuse for not having thought of this before myself. Maybe skipping the free range altogether for the week might be better than risk exposure to Good knows what. I have an appointment with their vet- I'll request all the prophylactic stuff imaginable and see...

Oh God... it never occurred to me there'd be rules for this sort of thing...(((banging head on desk))) thank you. This could have been a disaster.

I had to “manage” my rooster.

I hadn't thought of 4H... wow those are still around? We had one when I was a kid 😆 that's a great idea!

    Traveling cross country

Oh my goodness...I hadn't thought of that. I think I'll bring my screened in pop up tent... it's 15x15 feet... let them use that as a temporary 'run' during the day instead of fully free range in an unfamiliar yard. Would wing clipping help too you think? Thank you!

    Traveling cross country

Will be moving from Washington to Louisiana this summer. Taking my 11 hens and 2 roos along. My plan is to drive at night after the sun is fully set so it is cooler, and they will be more calm. Got medium dog crates with dividers: 2 hens to a crate, with black out covers, in the truck bed...

I had to “manage” my rooster.

I wish I had your courage and strength. I separated my two roos into their own 'flock' completely separate from the girls. They have their own run and only come out to free range after the hens are put up for the evening. That solved the stress, bullying and fighting in the flock. But did not...

Do hens become crabby when molting?

One of mine lost a lot of weight when moulting. Would only eat free range. Almost stopped eating her pellets, or black soldier fly larvae, even the sunflower seeds were hardly touched for several weeks. I'm happy to report that now the moult is over she's regained all that weight and some...
