    Feeding Mixed Age Flock

Hi! I am getting my newest chicks next week! I have 6 hens about to turn 1 year old. I plan to introduce my chicks to the flock at about a month old. My plan was to switch the whole flock to Nutrena's grower feed and supplement with oyster shell for the big girls. My question is about switching...

    Broody Hen and ordered chicks?

Hi! I have 7 chicks coming in 2 weeks from a hatchery and a hen has started being broody a couple of days ago. What are the chances I can just sneak those little Nuggets under her?? She's a pretty chill welsummer hen. This is the second time she's gone broody this year.

How to feed mixed age chickens?

Hi! I have chickens coming in May, and I plan to introduce them to my existing flock while they are still sort of small. Can they eat layer feed that I have in my run? Or should I change everyone to chick or grower feed?

    Broody Jail

    Broody Jail

Thanks!! I've had chickens on and off for 10 years and have never had one go broody so I just assumed that's what you do. She slept in the box last night. I took her out this morning and she didn't run back in. I was already planning on cleaning out their nest boxes today so I'll do that too!

    Broody Jail

Hi! I came home from work yesterday and found a hen in a nest box (not their normal time). I left her alone for a bit then went in to check on her and she would not get up when I took the 2 eggs out of the box. If she's still in there this morning I was going to put her in broody jail. I have a...

    Nesting Box Curtain

Yes i figured about the number of boxes. 😁 I had two eggs randomly in the run not the boxes today so I went down the rabbit hole as to why I thought they weren't dark enough. 🤣

    Nesting Box Curtain

Hi! My girls FINALLY started laying a couple of weeks ago. They clearly have a favorite box (the end). My thoughts is because it's the darkest so I decided to add curtains. Should I put fake eggs back in or let it ride since they know to lay in the boxes? Yellow lines are in front of their...

Are chickens weird about things being moved around in their coop?

Hi! I have 6 hens and plan on getting more in the spring. I'm hoping to put my brooder box in the coop. Do chickens typically handle the rearranging of their house ok? I'll need to move my nesting boxes and probably change how my roosts are set up.

Definitely agree about the hardwire cloth. Its the best! Side of the run are hardwire cloth it's just the roof that is chicken wite. The set I ordered from Amazon came with the wire so that's what we're using for now.

Thanks! I did know about the chicken wire. This is just what came with it and for now we are working with it. Its actually pretty close to our house and I think dog presence is going to help deter predictors. Hardwire cloth is the bestest for sure!! I think next summer we might look into...

Metal Shed Turned Into A Coop

EDIT: With new chicks coming this spring we decided to up our roost game early. We're going to take out their old roost and build a ladder for them and should be good! 😬 I wanted to convert my old shed into a coop for my chickies. There really wasn't a lot of info out there on turning sheds...

    Coop & Run Flooring

I could get either pretty easy. I like the idea that poop breaks down better in the wood chips though.

    Coop & Run Flooring

I'm in South Texas. Always hot 😅. Do wood chips dry out ok if they get wet the like 2 weeks a year we get rain? What's the upkeep like just fluff with a rake?

    Coop & Run Flooring

Hello! All tips and tricks appreciated. :) I have 9 twelve week old chickens (one has a scissor beak) that we converted a metal shed to a coop for. They have free access to their covered run. I can't free range all the time because of my dogs, but I do like to let them out when the dogs are put...
