I'm 4 days into incubation and my brinsea maxi advance and my brinsea liquid in glass thermometers are showing a 1 degree difference to each other (celsius)
I've ordered a third thermometer but until it arrives I'd like to know which thermometer would be most likely to be accurate?
The...
Thank you for the condolences, it has been a very crazy time for us.
This is my third time hatching, I use a brinsea heat plate for keeping the chicks warm, in an enclosure in our shed. We are on solar power but I'm pretty sure it never went out during the few days the chicks were in there.
I'm...
Our chicks died. It's too late to do anything about it, but here is my question.
My father-in-law passed away on day 20 of lockdown, we had to leave home immediately, which if course meant leaving the incubator.
I had a friend come in to keep an eye on the chicks. It was a bad hatch rate...
I am incubating a batch of eggs in my Brinsea eco, which requires hand turning them.
On day 2 I unexpectedly had to go away for a couple of days. This meant the eggs weren't turned for nearly 30 hours. When I got back I started turning regularly again.
Yesterday was day 7 so I candled. I had 6...
Thanks for all the answers, I guess I thought if it was the eggs being shipped they would have all quit early on rather than progressively through the incubation.
I have only been giving the new chicks proper chick feed so far, I have a brinsea brooder heater which doesn't have a temperature...
I just hatched my second batch of eggs.
The first batch I bought from private sellers and had them shipped, the hatch rate was 20/25. The ones that didn't hatch were either unfertile or early quitters.
This second lot I decided to get from a business that breeds heritage chickens and sells...
Yeah, I think this rooster will be chicken soup soon anyway, he started getting aggressive when my hen went broody and progressively has gotten worse.
I'll have some roosters in my shipped eggs, but that'll be a way aways till they can do the job.
Oh well.
Thanks for all the help/advice
I have 6 hens to the one rooster.
I candled the eggs I had been incubating and saw no veins so I cracked them open and they showed no sign of development. By comparison the shipped eggs I put in with them are developing well.
The photos are of a fresh laid egg I cracked open to check for...
OK thanks. I only have one rooster so a different rooster isn't really an option. We were given him and I'm starting to wonder if he's older than I thought he was which I guess affects fertility, would it affect a fertile egg developing as well though?
Hi there
No I only cracked the eggs to check the spots to see if they were fertile. When it looked like the cracked eggs were regularly looking fertile I used whole un cracked eggs to incubate.
I also have a hen sitting on eggs and am wondering if she's wasting her time
I very inexperienced at incubating, I had a successful first hatch from bought eggs (20/25) for my first time, and thought for my second lot I'd add some of my own eggs. I checked them for fertility and to my (inexperienced) eye I thought they were fertile. But at candling them not one had...
Sorry realised I didn't answer all your questions.
I don't know what breed she is as we took her in because her owner was going overseas. I think she's just some kind of farmyard mix but small like a bantam.
We're in spring in NZ so it's getting warmer but still cool nights. I think the eggs...
Hi, thanks for the reply.
She is sitting on standard eggs as she decided to sit in the laying box my brown rangers were laying in. I can't tell exactly how many are under her as she's very feisty and my hands can't take the pecking for long! I think there might be around 8 though.
I can't put...
I have hen that has gone broody (after investing in an incubator of course:rolleyes:) she's a bantam cross so quite small and the eggs she's sitting on are not quite fitting right under her, I can see them poking out, not fully but about half the egg.
Will these be developing or shall I take few...
Definitely no veins/vessels you're right, so must be a quitter.
I put in 26 eggs, at candling on day 7 I took out an unfertile and one that was cracked but left this one in as I was unsure, I checked it again yesterday (day 9) and was still unsure so needed some advice!
Thanks again:)
Hi thanks for replying
I did set them all on the same day that's why I was started to wonder about this one, it didn't have the same look as the others
:(
I'm a first time incubator and am trying to learn as much as I can but I need a little help please.
I have an egg in the incubator I’m not sure about. It doesn't seem as developed as the others when I candle. The other embryos are moving and wiggling but this doesn't and I also can't...
