By the way, that's a supposed-to-be temporary nest box I bought from TSC when we were building the bantam coop. There's only the one, so along with Martina being lonely all day yesterday with Jamie sitting, she got frantic with laying an egg. I think she finally piled in with Jamie and gave her...
Perfect! This is what I need to know. I'm going to try to get shipped eggs tomorrow but they only have a 50 percent fertility rate it looks like. I live an hour away from Ideal Poultry and could just quickly drive over there and get chicks close to the 20th day or so.
I'm starting to get...
Thank you. What does AI know? I'm going to try to get her eggs Monday. If that doesn't work, I'll try putting a couple of chicks under her.
I've got to make a cozy spot for her and some babies in the dog crate.
Also, would it be easier to get day old chicks and stick them under her? The risk there is if she doesn't raise them DH would be stuck raising them while I'm gone for 2 weeks in June. That would not go over well.
How do I know if she'd be a good mother? If I got her chicks this week, I have time...
So, I have a Polish question for you guys. My Polish, Jamie, appears to get broody again. She has been in the nest box pancaked for 24 hours, with at least one break. (All the experts say Polish rarely go broody, but here we are again.) Last March she sat for 23 days, gave up, got attacked by...
Louisa's fluffyish butt. I waited until after I had taken scissors to her messy bum feathers and dipped her in water to be sure it was all gone, before I took a picture.
To both you and Ponypoor, I prescribe lots of time sitting out with the chickens. At some point in life, we've got to learn to quit pushing so hard and get rest!
Please feel better soon.
Whenever my husband mentions the expense and time involved in chicken keeping, I point out it's cheaper than therapy. I've never been to therapy, but imagine chicken keeping us a lot more fun. Who wants to discuss their hidden hurts and resentments when they can admire the color of chicken poop...
Also, would it be possible to hire a couple of high school boys that you could direct on building the run? Or invite some family/friends to come have a barn-raising (run-raising) with you one Saturday? Grill hamburgers, buy a bunch of drinks and get 'er done.
If my 3 sons hadn't come one weekend...
Okay I'm a dummy today. I posted a Thursday picture on Tuesday. Sigh . . . My excuse is I've been sick.
So here's Twofer Tuesday pictures:
Cornelia and Charlotte sampling some green stuff. And alerting to a threat I never saw. That happened a lot this afternoon.
