What causes non-solid markings in Blue Ameraucana

I thought mom and dad were both Blue Ameraucana and this (I think pullet) looks almost exactly like the hen, except for gold showing through. What would cause that? This is a hatched baby from our backyard flock so no true guarantee on the hen but she looks just like the Blue Ameraucana we got...

    Giving new chicks to momma

Update a few months later…we didn’t get our broody to accept them. Should have tried in the middle of the night but we didn’t. She got vicious with them by the end of the day when it was time for her chicks to get under wing. We raised the chicks in the garage brooder and put them in our “kiddie...

I read the intro and am looking forward to some time this evening to go through the entire study. Thank you for providing!!!

    Pricing questions

This is exactly what I’m trying to gauge. What would cover your own costs. But trying to project it instead of quantify after the fact. I’d be very interested to see your results. Best of luck on the next round too. Learning curve is a very real concept and I hope you find the second batch a...

    Pricing questions

I’m glad I found this thread. I’m asking a similar question but I don’t think they’d be interested in doing their own processing.

    Break even price point

I research very throughly before taking on a project. This particular time I’m just trying to ballpark BEP - not looking for more than a few and a neighbor mentioned the idea of basically co-raising. He brought up basically the “foster price” for us to offer a couple of the birds we would raise...

    Aggressive chick behavior

We’ve had chickens for over a decade and bought multiple day-old chickens flocks. We just got six today from TS and one of the Rustic Rock chicks is pecking incessantly on the other. Feet and eyes are prime target. It’s constant. Has anyone seen this behavior, and what was the result? We’re...

    Break even price point

Never raised meat birds but considering it. I was talking with a neighbor that mentioned a local farm is charging $40/processed bird. That seems really high, and I know they’re in it as a business but it got me wondering what the break even price point is if you were to charge for a defeathered...

    Giving new chicks to momma

We had a broody just hatch 5 chicks Thursday/Friday. I want more than the 5 so I’ll be getting feed store chicks as soon as they’re available this week. Petunia is a good momma - will she accept the new chicks that are roughly a week younger than the 5 she hatched? I want more chicks but I want...

    Tractor supply chicks?

Same here in the Raleigh, NC surrounding area. Frustrating.

    Incubator recommendations

Coming here looking for suggestions too. I have a broody sitting on 11 eggs but I don’t have much faith she’s going to hatch them (all). I’ve noticed her going to the wrong nest too frequently. I know there are better ways to ensure her success but I was trying a totally natural method… now I’m...

    Gentling a rooster

We’re trying for hen-raised chicks. In October we had a broody hatch 4. One died in the night and a predatory bird got the other 3 over the next 6-8 weeks. I have a broody sitting on 11 right now. Expecting a 2/26 hatch date so we will see. I’m probably going to hit Tractor Supply for another...

    Gamma rooster

What do you mean when you say he will contribute blue to half his offspring and the rest default to black? It doesn’t matter to me who the baby daddy is. Lol. Going forward I want a blue layer as the breeder but at this point I know we’re going to have an even more colorful egg basket and that...

    Broody gathered more eggs

I discovered the extra eggs yesterday and will be checking nightly now for new eggs in the clutch. I have distinct markings on all the eggs including a new marking on the surprise eggs. We have around 2.5 weeks to see what shakes out.

    Broody gathered more eggs

We might be right on that border or we may be one day late on it. I’d hate for her to abandon nearly fully developed chicks in the egg but we have no sort of incubator set up. I’m only letting the flock grow bc we had a broody to do it for us naturally.
