Previously frozen eggs will have a thicker yolk but the flavor isn't affected. If the eggs have no visible cracks we eat them. I always wash my eggs just prior to cooking so any bacteria that might be on the outside doesn't get transferred to the inside when cracked open. If you have any...
Sex linked chickens can vary greatly in appearance. It's generally agreed that Cinnamon Queens are a cross between RIRs and Silver Laced Wyandottes -or- Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White. With RIR X RIW, at hatch, the females will be yellow/gold/brown and the roosters will be white. Not...
I agree with that. We're careful to keep our dog quiet but nobody else seems to worry about theirs. We live in the county and they don't restrict chickens or roosters but our little semi-rural neighborhood has deed restrictions that do. So we put up a six foot privacy fence around half of our 3...
I never knew mulberrys were considered invasive in some places. I love them because they grow well, provide shade, are a treat for my rabbits and the chickens love the leaves. Where I am they are not at all invasive. I guess the pollen could be a problem for some people.
My chickens are in the middle of 3 acres and the people who live down the street from me heard my girls egg song. They are across the road and three, one acre lots away. So if they can hear egg song that far away they could sure hear a rooster. If I had one.
If it doesn't have to be climbing plants then you might consider mulberry. I have a mulberry tree/shrub growing in my chicken's run and between the chickens fertilizing it and me dumping their soiled water on it, it grows like crazy. It gives them shade in the summer and since it's deciduous it...
I had a young hen that started laying and after a couple of weeks she would go to the nest box, sit for a while, then get out and yell very loudly and wouldn't stop until I went to see if something was wrong. Then she'd go back to the nest box and do the same thing again. This went on for two...
I disagree with much of this article and other parts I think are unnecessary. I don't give my chickens cooked food simply because I don't think it's a natural way for them to eat, but If I have anything raw my chickens can eat, which is almost everything, I give it to them. I throw all my...
Hi, I'm new to Wyandottes but I have also read that they lay all through the Winter. They were originally bred in Maine for really cold weather and their fluffy butts keep them warm. Mine are nine months old now. I have six and only two have started laying but those two are still laying and it's...
Hi all,
This is my second time as a member of BYC and my third time with chickens. Many years ago I had Leghorns. Crazy wild birds that preferred to roost in our Pecan trees and every day was an exciting egg hunt for the kids! Then a multi year, career focused interlude with no chickens. About...
