That's awesome. Even when I was in Mass (went to college there) I didn't drive like a Mass***. I've driven like a grandmother since I was 16. And I am always amazed when someone drives crazy in Portland, it's just so out of character most times. There's one person in Hollis selling chickens...

The coop holds a max of 8. And I spent some time looking at cold hardy breeds, can't say naked necks were on there! I've had Orps and RIR before, and they were perfectly lovely chickens. I kind of want some Easter Eggers for the kids, and then something cute, reasonably friendly, and a good...

So one of our biggest issues is housing. While they are chicks and inside, we've got it covered. I've got a great place to put them outside, I am going to fence in a treefall. But, I have no house for them. And I know I need to build something. I just get overwhelmed thinking about it...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I am this.close to convincing the husband to start with chicks (we've always started with older birds) this go around. I have some good idea about fencing and housing for the backyard. However, there is still a lot of snow on the ground, and I'd have to snowshoe out...

Hi Carrie, I am sorry you lost your chickens. It's hard to know without a necropsy if it was Marek's disease. There are a couple of things to keep in mind... 1) Marek's is a herpes virus (alphaherpes to be exact). Herpes viruses hang out in the nucleus of nerve cells. The major sign of...

Well, we are cleared enough that if we have a kid emergency we can get out of the garage, turn the car around and get down the driveway. Also, the sledding hill has been rebuilt to the delight of the boys. And mom packed it down for them. Sheesh sledding is hard work!

Both our phones did that. Even after I had told my phone not to earlier in the day. Grrr. We've already got a couple of inches! I am heading out to play with the boys. They want to learn to snowshoe!

You guys are going to make me reveal my plans for this place, but since this is the forever house, it can take some time. We've got 4 wooded acres. And I mean wooded. They really didn't clear enough land when they built the house. We need to clear some big trees out. My husband and I can...

That so cool about the bees. There was a hive on our property when we bought, but, by the time we figured out what it was, got an beekeeper out here, it looks like it was decimated by mites. It will be a miracle if they make it through the winter. But the beekeeper thinks it was a feral hive...

We had originally aimed for 3 chickens. We averaged 4 to 5 depending on what the hawks and owls were up to. But 3 is a great number to start with.

I can't wait for the cold to go away either. I am waiting for it to warm up some so we can actually GET our chickens. Of course, I need to build a coop and fence in where they are going to go. On guinea hens, yeah, they are good with the bugs, but I think the chickens are just as good...

Incorporating native and natural habitat into coop design and run layout

Awesome roost! And I will certainly have enough treetops to choose from. I've grown amaranth as an ornamental before. Do you just cut it down and give them the whole plant?
