We're getting rain..lots of it. The run is 3/4 covered with a tarp. The quarter of the run that is open is absolutely saturated with water. An hour ago, it began puddling. Every hen decided to try her hand at being a duck. Instead of staying in the dry areas where the roost, food, nesting boxes...
Love this idea for a thread. Sometimes it's too easy to get caught up in the daily things that annoy you, and it's great to be able to take stock and look at the big picture.
I'm thankful my brother-in-law is alive to see another Thanksgiving with us. Last year, he was diagnosed with stage 4...
I went with a 20 mil clear tarp for the entire run, 20x10. Buy once, cry once. Keeps them dry and allows sun in. I have a prefab round top run, so it was the best option for me. We are having the same storm, the wind blew the rain in from the NE, but it only reached about 1.5 feet in on 1/4 of...
54 degrees. We had a decent storm move in overnight and it's still raining. This is the first real rain the girls have experienced. The run is fully covered on top, but with the wind, there are wet spots inside. Some of them must have stood on the open side because they have wet droopy tails.
Being picky eaters!! They are worse than cats. They devour it one week, so I buy that item in bulk...they refuse to touch it again.
I've tried leaving the food that they decided was unacceptable, thinking they would eat it when they were hungry enough. They didn't touch it for over 24 hours...
My laughing hen is having a tantrum over sand being added to the run. They all thought the activity of having the barrier put in was great fun. However the 4 bags of sand added to the back third of the run is unacceptable to her.
She's going to lose her mind when the entire run is sand.
It's the 'chicken sand'. I just bought 4 bags from Amazon at 110.00. It didn't cover 1/3 of the run lol. I like the look and consistency much better than the Lowes Construction sand...but I'm going to run over to the landscaping tomorrow to see if I can find an alternative.
The eggs shells are a normal consistency. Not fragile, but not difficult to crack. The extra bloom is odd...but all animals are different I suppose. The whole egg doesn't stay wet for an hour, but the bottom laying on the nesting is still wet. I can tell hers when I wash them too.. extra rinse...
I have one hen that lays late in the day, a few times she's laid while roosting. My concern is that she takes forever to lay her egg, sometimes hours. She's not happy about it either; grumbles, pecking the side of the nesting box, and yelling when anyone comes close to the box.
Her eggs tend...
One of my hens loves to be picked up, flipped over and rocked back and forth.
Part of checking my girls is to rotate them upside down and check their feet. The majority of them feel this is an affront their dignity and will walk away after they are put down. For the second day in a row, the...
I have RIR's. They are my favorite based on what I've in the past. Heat tolerance was a huge factor in choosing them too. Egg production was the 2nd most important trait.
