Thank you! I found a rooster rescue in my area that will be the last resort but they can promise me they’ll get to live out their lives and not become dinner.
So, this is definitely hard for me, but I think we’ve ended up with 3 roosters. In a flock of 6, half being roosters will not work for us even though they’re all super sweet babies and currently get along well. I have incubated and hatched my first flock and while we planned to keep a single...
So Tupac, my lavender splash, is 100% rooster. He crowed. Did it a second time just so we knew lol. Alice Cooper the barred hybrid is not yet crowing but I have noticed the tail feathers are starting to arch.
Would roosters snuggle together though? I’d think they would constantly fight for the...
I’m aware of the differences. The temps on top of the 2 pads is reading at 85-90 degrees which is probably a bit cool and the brooder is right at 93 degree since the cool side has screen. The lamp is solely for light so they can see. I don’t use heating lamps with my quail or chicks. I live in a...
Good luck! One of my quail babies looks like it was born with splay leg, been keeping it in the glass throughout the day off and on but it’s a stubborn little thing. I have planned on keeping it as long as it’s having a good life.
The way I have it set up is the smaller one is technically under the glass of my brooder and there’s a puppy pad taped to the floor so it doesn’t move. Also have a cool side and the main heating element is above them, trying to sandwich them in with warmth. It’s what I did with my chickens...
So one has given up, I think we’re gonna lose 1, so we are still technically at 6. And out of 3 left, I saw pipping and movement so I’m hoping for the best.
First 6 are dried off and snuggled up on the heating pad! #7 just hatched and is enjoying a very short time as an only child till the others hatch or it joins the siblings in the brooder. I think considering them being practically frozen when I got them, 7 is more than I expected! Pretty sure #8...
Yeah I plan on keeping them as long as possible, and 1 long term, but I don’t know how 2 roosters would exist with only 4 hens. Also I’m taking a chance keeping a rooster at all due to our city ordinances but our neighbor has had a rooster since we bought our house and nobody says anything. And...
Poo lol I kinda figured 2pac, my lavender splash was a rooster, but the other one, Alice Cooper I was hoping for a hen! I don’t want them to end up on a dinner plate so I might send 1 to the farm sanctuary near my house so I still visit him. Thanks for your input!
I actually followed a post a few weeks ago on Facebook about this exact thing.
You'll want to be very careful how you feed her, she’s been genetically engineered to be too heavy to walk by 8 weeks. I believe these meat chickens are Cornish cross and their lives are not great in the chicken...
So I have 6 total chickens, they are all almost 8 weeks old. 4 of them have no comb development whatsoever so I’m leaning towards hens on those.
These 2, the black one seems to be a barred Wyandotte and the other seems to be a lavender splash. They came from a mixed flock and I’ve only seen...
Sorry for the late response, had a death in my family and I had to checkout of the world for a week or so.
The good news so far is that out of 14, 10 ended up being fertile at 7 days. 1 was cracked and 3 others were clear with no signs of development. Air sacs all looked good and there was...
We are currently letting the ground dry up some, thanks to our lovely Colorado weather that does what it wants lol! But the plan is to get the run/cage set up and concreted into the ground Thursday. Then I think I’ll feel more comfortable with them in their run to enjoy the dirt.
I’m...
Thank you! I’m getting the incubator ready and will update in a week or so, hopefully with at least half developing!
The cold sounds more forgiving than extreme heat so I’m hoping for the best!
Thank you! Should I take dirt from my yard or buy some? I live in Colorado so our yard dies in winter but I don’t necessarily want to introduce too many germs/bacteria to them, so I’m not sure.
