    First Saturday Lime

Thanks for the input! I see it can also be used around the perimeter/foundation of a house for insects as well. May as well try it out!

    Medicine Cabinet

Thanks for the reply! What are you normally using the vet wrap for?

    Medicine Cabinet

What kind of medications/supplements/healthcare items are recommended to keep on-hand? I have a small flock of 4 hens (will be 8 soon), and I'd like to be prepared for any common illnesses and injuries. Thanks!

    First Saturday Lime

Does anyone here use First Saturday Lime to help control pests? If so, what's the best method when applying to the coop/run? This would be in addition to their dust bath. I don't have any pest issues yet, but I'd like to do what I can to prevent it.

    Exhaust fan for coop

I actually have that fan (not in a coop), and it moves a good amount of air, but it isn't that quiet. And, it looks like the first power station you mentioned would only run that particular fan for about 3 hours. The second power station, less than 2 hours maybe. You can figure this out by...

    Run Ground Cover

Awesome, thanks for the info! The ground is pretty flat, so improving drainage would probably be an extensive project. Should I try to put a layer of maybe thicker mulch/wood chips first? Or are they just going to scratch and stir up the substrate down to the dirt anyway?

    Run Ground Cover

I was thinking about putting fallen leaves in the run for ground cover. Is it better to use whole or shredded leaves? Maybe both? It's in a very shady area so the ground doesn't dry out as much, especially this time of year. Or should I consider a different type of ground cover?

    Reinforcement ideas

Your run looks similar to the one I just put up. The included "hardware cloth" is trash. My plan was to add extra reinforcement anyway but still installed the crappy fencing just for an extra layer. I then put a layer of thicker gauge poultry fencing around it, then folded 19g HWC that extends...

Where your chick brooder is located MATTERS

I just raised my chicks in a spare room for 6 weeks. I placed a duct booster fan near the brooder and ran the hose to a sealed window pass-through. Also closed off the HVAC vents so the room was basically negative pressure. Some dust settled in the immediate area, but the rest of the room stayed...

Chick beak length, normal growth or should I be concerned?

I'm just starting out myself, but I've seen my chicks honing their beaks themselves on something hard like a rock or cinderblock.

    Tractor supply pricing

Local TSC had a tub full of bantams the other day and I believe they were $6.99.

    Another little/bedding question...

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I'll definitely be looking into the zeolite for the poop pit. I was hoping to keep things relatively 'low maintenance' as far as cleaning out the whole coop floor. And I do have a duct "booster" fan I was going to rig up at the top of one gable end.

    Another little/bedding question...

I'll be finishing up my coop here soon, and I can't make up my mind on what type of litter to put in it... It's basically a 4x8 shed. Ground level with raised floor. The summers here in central VA can get pretty humid, and the area is pretty shaded, so it doesn't dry as quickly after a...

Frustrated about the availability of chicks

I happened to stop by my local TSC exactly 3 weeks ago right after they received their first shipment of chicks. Went home, set up the brooder and returned the next day hoping pullets were still available. An employee said like half of the chicks purchased the day before were returned and...

    Roost/Window Location

Yep! Lol I should've been more specific. I'm concerned about morning light/sunrise for the layers. First light is very dim for a while and I've read somewhere that sunrise exposure is pretty important. Like I said before, I'm overthinking things lol I just want everyone to be happy and healthy.

    Solar heat lamp

Heat lamps draw a LOT of energy and unless you have a battery bank to store the solar power, it wouldn't work at night anyway. And you'd need a LOT of solar panels to run a heater during the day, as well as have enough juice to charge batteries for night time. Then you have to think about cloudy...

    Roost/Window Location

The windows are next to be installed. I'm using sashes that will tilt open for the 'clear' windows. For ventilation, there are 6 inch "clerestory" openings with flaps that can closed on the 4' walls, gable-end vents with at least one duct fan, as well as open rafters under the eaves. It's all on...

    Roost/Window Location

Hello all, new member here! I'm nearly finished building a 4x8 walk-in coop, but now I'm getting to the phase of worrying about the details... Where should the roosts be placed in reference to windows/lighting? There are lots of tall trees to the east and south close by, so the area has...
