Another "broody hen" post... but hear me out!

I just dont have any room for more chicks / hens sadly. So I cant just give her chicks / fertilised eggs. If I did that everytime a hen went broody I would end in in carnage.

Another "broody hen" post... but hear me out!

So the eggs I've given her are unfertilized. I live in a suburb so can't have a rooster. As for chicks. I do actually have 3 chicks currently in our house. Being sort of hand raised by us and the children (they want them to be super tame). But I was very nervous about the broody hen seeing the...

Does it have to have a wire floor? I've found some locally but they all have a sort of "baking tray" metal sheet floor.

Most "pet like" breed that is sexlink?

Hi, Looking to expand our flock and want to hand rear a couple of chicks, looking for sexlink girls so we can get them from a local breeder day 1. What breeds would you say make good "pets" or likely lap chickens? We bought older pullets last time (Oprs and sussex) and while they eat out your...

Two of my hens laying terrible eggs

Couldn't get calcium citrate. Will calcium carbonate work?

    Calcium Citrate Question

Realise this is an old thread but though I could add something useful. Magnesium Sterate is a really slippery powder and is just added to stop the tablets sticking in the punch and die when they are made. That is all. It's very low amounts and inert.

Two of my hens laying terrible eggs

Will do! thanks. 600mg per hen? The Sussex seems to be fine? I guess I could crush a 600mg tablet into some food and serve it them all?

Two of my hens laying terrible eggs

Hi, two of my 3 young girls (who only started laying a month ago) are laying eggs with terribly thin shells, paper thin. Often broken and even maybe pecked. It's weird because they seem to just drop them out wherever they are (from the roost, outside). Rather than consciously "lay" them...

I think my light Sussex may be about to lay her first?

5 eggs in 5 days from the sussex now! And at least one of the BO's has started laying too. Assume their eggs will get bigger over time? They are all pretty small! haha

I think my light Sussex may be about to lay her first?

We have an egg! She has laid. Quick question. Is it normal they make a LOT of noise if you take the egg??? What an absolute racket. Am I meant to leave it or something?

I think my light Sussex may be about to lay her first?

Thanks for the input! She is lovely. Very very nice and intelligent personality. Lovely personable girl. No these are my first ever hens so nobody has ever used (or been in) those boxes. I'll pop a wee curtain up. She looks in the left one much more than the right. The nest boxes are 15inches...
