Yes, we apparently rescued her and 2 other hens (we didn't realize we were picking up ex battery hens). They're all currently separate from our primary flock.
Aside from looking super gruesome, she has been going to town on the food I've given her. So far she has eaten 8oz of duck crumbles (it's the highest protein we have on hand) and has drank a fair amount of water.
Just realized I should add some poultry cell to the water, so doing that now. And...
I have her in my office with me and I'm just...so close to vomiting from the blood smell. I'm keeping her separated until the comb heals up a bit, so not worried about other hens pecking her for now.
ETA: I can leave the blood for her to clean off, but I don't know how long I can handle the...
So we ended up tying chopsticks together overnight to apply constant pressure.
The comb was a little purple when we got up, but is not bleeding. We took the sticks off and spritzed some vetericyn on the wound again.
She is currently going full hog on the food we put down. She hasn't paid...
My leghorn has a huge comb and we found her this afternoon with it ripped in half 😭
We tried applying pressure to the area and thought that helped stop the bleeding. We also dabbed with flour to help. We applied vetericyn a little while later and then blu kote before bed.
We just checked and...
Good point, I actually totally forgot about her beak. I don't think it looks THAT trimmed though, just the very tip. Her comb hits the water first when trying to drink and she gets so annoyed having to shake off the water. It would be funny if it weren't so sad 😭
I will say though, this picture...
Is there a way to I guess tie the comb back? I've done similar with long eared dogs haha
She gets very frustrated trying to eat or drink with it in the way.
Want to add...these hens ARE NOT with our other chickens. Our primary flock is still in the brooder, but these girls are in our coop and run. The chicks will not be old enough to go outside until the month quarantine period is over.
Though if the hens may be carrying anything that could be...
We recently acquired 3 18mo hens from what we thought was a local small farm. I have since been told they are likely ex-battery hens.
They're all pretty rough looking, but 1 looks like she's half dead. She has a hard time eating and drinking due to her large comb.
We torpedo fed her a mix of...
