:) That’s ok as long as they are in that chicken garage for a while, initially, before you let them all into the run and the door is open for them to come back in, they will do so.
My chicken house does not have an electric door either, and sometimes (more often then I’d like to admit) we forget...
I would definitely not keep young chicken outside overnight, no matter how secure the run might be. It’s just an open invitation to predators and scary for the young ones. Do your chicken have a secure coop connected to the run that they can return to at night?
Never heard of this breed. And it is a bit young. Would not venture an opinion based on comb and waddles, but could it not easily be vent sexed at this point?
I know this is an old post, but for those searching similar issues now also look up “femoral head disease” in Japanese quails. Looks very similar your pic. I recently had a female quail, 1 year old, that had similar issues. Very unusual swelling on the thighs. I had to separate her out as she...
It really depends on the breed of the more mature birds. I used to have Colombian Red X and they are just cannibals. One day one of the 8 week olds found a hole in the fence that I never noticed before and went over to the mature birds, it was just awful when I found what was left of it. Since...
Ok, so the roly-poly egg and the other unhatched egg were both quitters, which became more clear in the candling on day 23 (I candled in a rush before putting the eggs into lockdown).
That “standing up” egg had an unusually large air pocket (almost 1/3 of the egg). But other than the air...
My rollers are out since lockdown, and it is now evening of day 22 and and out of 23 eggs, 21 hatched without problem (at the time I wrote the original post, 2 had pipped but not hatched yet, they have hatched since).
I noticed this one egg tipping up onto its pointy side on day 16, before...
It is the afternoon of day 22 on my chicken egg hatch. Since around day 16 I noticed one of my eggs “standing up”. My incubator is the type where the eggs lie down and are turned on rollers. The egg’s blunt end just kept popping up into the air, never seen anything like it. I read up about it...
Thanks, Susan, everyone. I did take the 9 quail hatchlings out, most of them had been in there for over 30 hours, and they were totally fine. They did not mind the chicks bumbling around, as they are so much more agile, and seemed to use the fluffed up chicks as surrogate moms.
The little quail...
Congrats to your new additions! I only had hen-hatched chicks when I was a child raising chickens (not lucky enough to have a broody hen successfully hatching within the last 20 years of raising chicken in my adult life), and at that time the hen would be out with her clutch within a week of the...
I am hatching quails and chicks. Quails were started 3 days later. Yesterday morning (day 17 for quails, day 20 for chicks), the first quail hatched. Then other quails followed. 2 of 22 chicks hatched in the late evening (of chick day 20). My question is: tonight it will be 36 hours since the...
