My son has an African goose that was raised with ducks. She just thinks she’s part of the flock. She can get aggressive with strangers but she LOVES my son. She’s about 8 years old and seems content with life.
She does make a lot of noise when there are hawks or eagles around but wasn’t much...
Thank you. You've all confirmed my suspicions. I'm fine with one rooster out of eight chicks. I just hope he's a nice one. A mean one is a real nightmare.
This is probably an easy one, even though these chicks are only 4 weeks old. These two buff orpingtons are supposed to be pullets, but... What do you think?
I'm another convert to the mama brooder. Thank you all so much! I'm adding two chicks to the flock and they are happy and healthy using this method.
Here's my setup:
They're In a large dog crate in my craft room. I'll take them outside if it ever stops raining!
My hens were attacked by a dog in early June. Five of the eight were killed. One was uninjured and two had puncture wounds and lots of feathers ripped out. those two looked awful for a while but are now completely healed and looking great. One started laying again after a few weeks, but my...
I have two SS that are 7 1/2 months old. They always attract attention and compliments on their coloring amongst their Black Australorp and Welsummer sisters. They are the first to come running when I go outside, checking to see if I have anything for them. They are both good foragers and...

I was doing that same dance trying to keep my purple-painted toes away from my hens (especially the two speckled sussex) while talking to my 29 year old son who thought it was hilarious!
Okay - so I did it! The chickens are eight weeks now, fully feathered and out in the coop (their second night). It's been unusually warm here this week, so I think the transition was pretty painless. We'll see how they feel when we get back to normal winter temps. The girls look pretty happy...
Thank you all for the encouragement. I'm sure the girls will be just fine in the new Garden Coop I built them out in the yard. They're all cold-hardy breeds and it's not really all that cold here in Maryland. I haven't done this before, though, and I'm not sure of how and when to get them out...
I haven't taken them outside yet. It's been in the 30's and 40's during the day and that seems like it would be a shock coming from 70. Maybe when they've got all their feathers? I really wasn't thinking of just suddenly leaving them out there!
I thought that maybe it would work to move them...
You just took them from inside and put them out in the coop? I've got eight 6 week olds in my laundry room where it's 70 degrees and I've been wondering how I'm going to transition them to being outside birds. I'm going to give them another couple of weeks at least inside, but by then it'll be...
I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and I'm expecting my chicks to arrive from My Pet Chicken any time in the next few days - 3 Australorpe, 2 Speckled Sussex and 3 Welsummer. It's very exciting!
I'm married (32 years) with two grown children, one little grandson and two little dogs (Shi...
