Can I DIY an anti-roost cone?

My eggs will hatch in less than a week and I'm going to buy a heating plate. I heard that the flat ones without the anti-roost cones often get pooped on by chicks. Is it possible for me to DIY an anti-roost cone? If so, what materials are safe to use?

Dog cage, fish tank, or plastic bin for brooder?

Thanks so much for your input. I will most likely choose a dog cage as it seems to be the best option and can be modified more easily. However, now that you mentioned a cardboard box, that also seems viable. I don’t plan on regularly brooding chicks, but I do have family who would be interested...

Dog cage, fish tank, or plastic bin for brooder?

Oh wow, thank you for the pics! I don’t think it will work for me since I don’t have wood and planks lying around, but I think a modified dog cage could work. Thanks!

Dog cage, fish tank, or plastic bin for brooder?

Interesting! I have not heard of that idea so far. How big is it? I have a spare pop up hamper too, but it’s cylindrical. Do the shavings/dust fall out of the mesh?

Dog cage, fish tank, or plastic bin for brooder?

I’m incubating chicks and they’re going to hatch within a week or less. I’ve been debating on whether to get a dog cage/crate, a fish tank, or a plastic bin to set up a brooder. I was leaning more towards a large fish tank, but apparently it has poor circulation and air flow due to the glass...

Contaminated distilled water and now egg smells bad

Update: I candled them and yep, rotten eggs! 2 of them was literally pitch black, and had black chunks. It was very gross to see. 3 out of the 14 eggs have veins. I really hope they make it all the way to hatching. Thanks everyone!

Contaminated distilled water and now egg smells bad

That’s awful. Yeah I try my best to read reviews, although I did candle before putting the eggs in and the air cells were tiny. That’s awful! I did candle before setting and the air cells were tiny, although 2 had detached air cells. I will definitely take up your advice on reading reviews...

Contaminated distilled water and now egg smells bad

Oh wow I hope not. I also bought mine from eBay. The seller did say he collected the eggs right before shipping but I can only take his word for it.

Contaminated distilled water and now egg smells bad

No, I bought them from a seller who has their own flock. It took around 4-5 days to ship. It’s technically day 9-10 now, so I will take your guys’ advice and candle.

Contaminated distilled water and now egg smells bad

Hello! I recently started incubating my eggs (day 5) and about a day or two ago the incubator started smelling off, but I was afraid to do anything to the incubator like cleaning it. However, I finally decided to clean it after reading that it’s probably because the water was contaminated. I...

    Question about turning eggs

Thank you! Yes I am hoping that there are quitters to remove by day 7. In the meantime I will just manually turn them.

    Question about turning eggs

Hello, thank you for your comment! I’ve replied in a previous comment but I have decided to remove the turner like you and others have recommended. It seems to be the best option until I remove unviable eggs.

    Question about turning eggs

Hello! I recently ordered a dozen shipped hatching eggs. I have a small automatic incubator that can only hold 12 eggs, but the seller gave me 2 extra in case any broke in transit. None of them broke, and I have 14 eggs to incubate. I managed to put all 14 in the incubator, but 6 of them are not...
