We are new to chickens - we got three chicks from a neighbor in April and now 9 from Alchemist farm. Of the three original ones, one of them has already been eaten because he was aggressive, and now the other two (1 male 1 very assertive/top female) are chasing my 3 year old who is very small...
Thank you!! Interestingly the rooster we had to cull was the same age - five months. But he was bigger and obviously the dominant one.
We are new to the chicken world, and atart s out with 3 chicks. 2 of them turned out to be boys so I guess we need to get some more!!
This chicken is 5 months old. I thought this was a hen as it exhibited no dominant behaviors and never crowed. I had another rooster who led the flock (they are free range) and this one always acted like a hen. Ran for cover when the rooster cried, etc.
Then my rooster became aggressive and I...
Thanks, this is really helpful! This was kind of my feeling too -- why use hardware cloth if something could just climb over the fence. I do think we will put some sort of top on to keep out aerial predators, but probably not right away and it will probably only be chicken wire, so not enough to...
In my experience hardware cloth is pretty heavy duty... I'm not sure why I would need to add the welded wire if I do hardware cloth?
We haven't had any problems with bears, but they are around. I'm guessing they aren't going to be a big issue.
I have a hardware cloth chicken tractor that is only 6 x 10. It's basically a mobile coop, no run. It's for rotational grazing/foraging, so like in the fall I can put them on my garden bed for a few days and let them eat plants and weeds and fertilize it for next year.
The full size coupe and...
Where did you put the hot wire? On the outside middle and top? Or closer to the bottom? Trying to figure out what you're looking for I keep out with the hot wire.
Hello, I am designing my chicken area on my small farm, and I'm wondering how gangbusters to go on the 150 feet of perimeter fencing.
It's actually not crazy expensive to go for hardware cloth. If I have a 4-ft high fence, 150 ft. of 1/2 in mesh hardware cloth will cost me $390. By contrast...
This is so helpful! I like the idea of just eliminating them when I see bad behavior as opposed to giving them all a set amount of time and then choosing the 'best' one. (I did know in my heart that as much as I want a rooster I would rather have no rooster than one that isn't kind to humans and...
Edit for more guidance: We are receiving 10 straight run chicks in a few weeks as we are wanting to grow our flock. (Starting with 3 was so we could kind of get our feet under us.) I plan to follow the same procedure: brooder in the bathroom at first, lots of handling, then moving them out to a...
We have three chickens, two hens and a rooster, that we raised from chicks in our bathroom. I have a 3 year old and together we (carefully) snuggled them multiple times per day. They are now almost 4 months old and are living outside where they have a coop they go in at night and they free range...
