Our roost pole broke and we replaced it with a flat board about 1' x 3", wide side up. They do not roost on the new roost! Are they still traumatized by the broken roost? The new one is about an inch closer to the roof, but there should be enough room.
I am going to try the oatmeal trick before I break my neck getting miss Lucy out of the hemlock. The other 5 new girls roost in the rhododendrons and are fairly easy to grab and send to bed, but the 6th goes very high, and it is a comedy now to get her, but I fear a tragedy some night.
Eve
We treated a rooster with bumblefoot for a long time, (months) soaking, draining, bandaging. One side healed after the scab was soaked off and pus drained out, one side still had a large hard mass on the top of the toes that would not drain.
When my niece came back from the Peace Corps (animal...
Did she recover?
We had a very bad coon attack with deep long bloody gashes, no feathers, a bit of bone.
I sprayed her with spray Bactine at least once a day, sometimes twice, and she recovered very well and looks as good as new now!
Happy ending, hope yours was the same.
Our bunny hopped into the hen house tonight instead of going back into his hutch- (they share a pen area, but have separate sleeping quarters- 1 bun & 5 hens)
I thought he might want to be warmer with them, but after reading these posts I went back out to check, and he was happy to be let out...
We lost 2 very healthy young (9 months) laying hens within 12 hours- one I found at 4 PM and the other the next ,morning.
Both had been in top health, seemingly. They had ranged onto the neighbors and I fear ate something poison there, (Chem lawn type neighbor) alas. The remaining ones are OK so...
I am so sorry- I lost 2 young very healthy hens in the past 24 hours- no visible cause- they were on my neighbors lawn, though, and perhaps found something toxic there, she has a lot of yard crew. Why do the chickens cross the road???? It isn't a good idea.
Miss them. I know how you feel, sorry!!!
Yea, wing clipping and more fencing together I think will be the only way-
The 3 older hens never left the property, but the young ones are more adventurous, and now 2 are dead.
I did so like to have free-range hens, though......
I had a long talk with her, and found out that her rodent bait is carefully done and not chicken accessible, so perhaps it is grub or mole stuff they ate, or toxic fertilizer. Her lawn crew is out to bill her to the max, that is obvious. Since she has well water, I suggested she discuss with...
Yes, we are on our way out to get deer netting now. Can't afford a 150 yard fence--
I just wonder what substance could knock them out so quickly?? Is grub poison so toxic to larger animals? I mean, a grub has not much body weight.
I called her and told her of the 2 deaths since her pest man was there and asked for his number, to see what he used.
She wouldn't give me his name or number, but said he would call me-- I'm waiting. She did say he was putting mouse bait, in stations. I don't know, maybe they died from...
We had 7 free range hens, 3 older and 4 young ones. The 4 young ones free ranged far and wide, and had started going over my neighbors large property that is kept very well manicured, unlike our woodsy lot. She called me 3 days ago to chase them home, for the first time, which I did, then I took...
I don't have an answer, I am in the same boat.
My 4 young hens prefer the neighbors manicured yard to our natural woods. I was just over there rounding them up with a pink umbrella, and it is not so easy herding hens!
I am thinking of rigging up deer net along the property line, which would...
