Ha. Looked out with flashlight after dark last night to check the hen-house from our second story bedroom, and saw a rat inside the run stealing food. Today will be his last day on this earth ...

Question of the Day - Friday, February 6th, 2026

This year? My eight hens are enough for now. Love 'em!

    A very bad day

Oh VeeKay, I'm so sorry! I'm retired and my eight hens are almost my entire occupation lately. I don't know how I would handle something like that. But, learn from it and you'll move on, but you can never forget. I hurt for you.

    Freezing Waterers Experiment

Considering that the chicks need food and water all the time, including at night when locked in the Coop for preservation of their lives, the water most likely only freezes in the last couple of hours, so we leave the water in there at night. The waterer in the Run is brought in at night so that...

    Freezing Waterers Experiment

Thanks for this reply. I do know about the failings of AI, but my feelings may not have been too apparent "between the lines" in my post. My post was only an information text to point out the salt part of my "experiment." I know that 32F freezes water, and we DO remove the waterers in the Run at...

    Freezing Waterers Experiment

Sunday, January 25th, 2026 We let our eight Cream Legbar hens out of the coop and into the run every morning, and then for a while each evening they are let out on the property free-ranging. I’m retired, and I spend a lot of time outside with them, I love my girls, and they are quite friendly...

Fake Eggs in Nesting Boxes-- Good Idea, Nah, or Meh?

Ours don't wait. Two or three will jam in there at a time. And the nest boxes are only 12x12x12. It's funny to watch them squirming around.

Fake Eggs in Nesting Boxes-- Good Idea, Nah, or Meh?

I put a fake egg in the left-front nest box months ago, to see what would happen. With over 840 eggs so far the eight girls just about always use the same nest (left-front), except maybe 10 or 12 exceptions in their 10-months, in the coop, the run, and I even found a couple on the yard. This...

    Heater or heat panel -10

Thank you. We check the girls several times during the day, and make adjustments as we think fit. I'm just always open to suggestions. As most of you know, the chickens aren't just egg-layers, they become friendly pets pretty quick. Our bedroom is on the 2nd floor with a window on the...

    Heater or heat panel -10

There are mentions here about some breeds being better acclimated to cold weather. We have eight Cream Legbar hens, no rooster, all born Feb 25, 2025. They have been laying nicely, but winter is now upon us. Does anyone have data on how the Cream Legbars handle cold? We routinely go down into...

Still learning how to navigate this site, and probably posting in the wrong places ... I'll get it, eventually. Just posted the first avatar for the Slater Farm page, this is "Paige," one of our Cream Legbar hens, one year old on Feb 25th, 2026. .

Rats? A Cat? Something Else? What killed my chickens?

That would tear me up. Have you tried using one of those Trail Cameras? I have one and it snaps a pic when there is movement, so best to place it where the chickens won't trigger it but an approaching varmint will. They will show you what is in your area during the night. I have a secure coop...

Since July we've had 475 eggs, in the boxes, but about six in the run or the yard where they range about 2hrs before sundown. Yesterday I saw some activity and found a "hidden nest" in the bushes. Four eggs and some fragments of a fifth. Locking them up for a week to re-educate. I go out to do...

    New to chickens

Yes, they are! They visit me when free-ranging, hop on my knee, and I hold them for five minutes or so. Now and then one even gets sleepy and nods off! They are so much fun.
