    With only a few hens, you don't exactly get a nest full in one day. So my question is, how long can an egg lay "dormant" and still be viable, before the hens sets them, or they are put in an incubator?

    Howdy doody! I'm from South East GA. I've had laying chickens all my life, RIRs in particular. A few years ago, I got some silkies and cochin bantams, and haven't looked back. I love those little guys. Anybody else on here from GA?

    Which breeds go broody

    I also have to second the response of Cochins or Silkies. I've hatched chicks with both of those breeds. Also, I know you can't beat an Old English Game hen for mothering abilities, although I've never owned the breed, personally.
