FREE breeder stock BLRW roo, MA/NH border, hatched in May

We have one FREE BLRW roo for pick up. From excellent breeder stock (Red Roof Hens) that we hatched back in May. The hens are ready to move over to the big girl coop and we don't have room for another rooster. I can get a picture if requested, but he is a darker roo - I guess Black. Our current...

    tiny chick not thriving?

Thanks everyone. This is my 3rd year raising chicks but haven't had a runt before (lucky I guess). We will try the yolks and see if that helps it.

    Hot Chicks In Brooder

the general recommendation is to lower temp every week by 5 degrees, so it could be yours are a little warm. But, yes if they are huddled together it's too cold, and if they are laying about panting then it's likely too warm. They do sometimes stretch out for a nice nap, but they would still be...

    tiny chick not thriving?

we had some chicks hatch Wed/Thurs, 5 total. 4 are doing great and being normal chicks. One is much smaller than the others and extremely sleepy. I have tried to show it the food and water, and watched to see its behavior. The only thing it really seems to want is sleep. Should I be more...

    The Wyandotte Thread

I haven't read through all 58 pages yet, and I know my guy isn't show quality, but I love him just the same. I got him at a swap at 8 wks, and read up on the breed. He's very mellow tempered, and last year we hatched out a bunch of crosses, including a very beautiful all blue hen. I try not to...

    Good Cold-Weather Breeds?

Been said already but I would definitely get ones with flat (pea or rose) combs. I am very happily keeping a flock of Wyandottes, EEs, and EE/Wyandotte crosses. We have a well made coop but it is not insulated. They have done very well in some pretty cold weather (staying in the coop).

    Adequate shelter for a peafowl?

My DH has agreed to construct a shelter for a peafowl this summer, but we are not sure what to build. We live in New England so it is COLD in the winter. A treehouse won't work as we don't have good tall trees (the only pea I know of has a nice treehouse at his farm). Any pointers on what would...

Please reassure me that heat lamps are safe!!!

This is definitely NOT common but a coop in NH just burned down, probable cause a heat lamp. The chickens perished. I don't know more but it was in the Nashua Telegraph. So it could happen... I have used heat lamps in our barn but agree common sense must apply: secure it at least two ways, make...

    grass, grubs, and chickens

I am sure they do enjoy scratching, but why only in this area? Maybe because it's the area that will bother me most. Interesting that there may not be a correlation to any yummy meals below the grass. So, last summer the paddock was rested until late summer, after which it was lightly grazed...

    grass, grubs, and chickens

My chickens are taking to dirt a grass paddock which is 1/4-1/2 acre size. They scratch and tufts of grass and dirt go flying. The other similarly sized paddock is rock and unimproved dirt with minimal stubby grass. They never go in that one. Nor do they do this on our lawn which seems healthy...

QUICK Help Please....Which Fly Predator do I want to order?

I'm set up on a schedule. Maybe they are meeting standing orders first, then new ones? But that still sounds odd. May be worth a call to them, to see if they can expedite it.

    How old before winter?

They need to be fully feathered out, and preferably with some time to grow because they are going through a lot of changes. I am assuming they'll also be outside from ~6 weeks on. Hopefully some of the experts who've done this will chime in but I am thinking 3 months growing before temps get...

    Flies inside?

This is my first year attempting fly control (if there is such a thing) around our barn but for the adult flies, we are using two hanging Rescue traps (bags with water and bait in them). At first it didn't seem to be doing much but the past few days the bags have been buzzing with trapped flies...

    Vet Vent!

Very interesting posts... and there really is a wide range of views out there. For my part, I worked in a small town vet clinic throughout HS (ok, that's a while ago but still relevant). The practice always found a way to take care of animals in urgent need, even when the owners were...

This may be a stupid question, but....

Quote: I think it'd be good to have nest boxes ready for them soon. While they probably won't start laying for a month or two more, they will get used to them and start laying in the right place (though at first they may not know what is happening and their eggs will go wherever they are...)...

new chicks with the old flock ???? help

Are there other hens nearby who could hurt the chicks? Or roosters? If not, I say build the ramp and let her raise them. She is the natural mom, after all. Congrats on your new chicks!
