Coop humidity in soggy Pacific Northwest - need help

I live in PDX and no longer have chickens, but when I did, I had a 50watt red reptile bulb (in a protective heat lamp with guard) triple hung in my coop. Most people get upset about having any sort of 'heat' light in a hen house, but I did feel like it dried things out faster. It's a gentile...

My little Nando just will not grow! Update: He's found a forever home!

From the sounds of it, he broke his toe and it got infected. I don't think it was bumblefoot. He likely had a weakened immune system with all his other issues. Still, he was unique and we all enjoyed him for the entirety of his short life. I hope his story helps others with micro chicks.

My little Nando just will not grow! Update: He's found a forever home!

Hi did end up living a happy life! His life was cut short due to a toe infection, but his new owner took him to the vet and did everything she could for him. He had a burial on their property and everything. I believe he died nearly a year ago. His offspring live on...

New to rabbits. What advice do you have for a new owner? **Pics included**

Well, today marks my first time dumpster diving. I was driving by a construction area and saw this HUGE cardboard tube sticking out. My first though was what fun that would be for a rabbit. My second thought was no way. I couldn't dumpster dive right in the middle of the town. Then I decided...

New to rabbits. What advice do you have for a new owner? **Pics included**

Yes, he's a mini rex. Soft as cotton. So far he seems quite clean. I went to a friends house with a huge rabbit living in a tiny wire bottomed cage and his rear was covered in feces and debris. Made me so sad to see. My guy seems to use his litter box religiously and stays immaculately clean!

New to rabbits. What advice do you have for a new owner? **Pics included**

We have a dreadfully shady back yard. Some areas never see the sunlight. I would never let a rabbit die of heat stroke confined in the sun, but I know many others that have. Live and learn I guess! The Pacific NW is a very moderate climate. Rarely too hot or too cold, so during the summer, a...

When you say 'groom him,' does that mean regular baths? He seems clean, but I'm happy to do it. I saw this video on youtube and it made us all laugh and laugh..

New to rabbits. What advice do you have for a new owner? **Pics included**

Oh man, I had to worry about coccidia in the chickens. Now I have to worry about bun too?! So far he seems very healthy and cavorts around happily. I have room for bales of (oat)hay in my garage, so I'll head to the feed store and see what they have. I'm giving him free choice alfalfa and a bowl...

New to rabbits. What advice do you have for a new owner? **Pics included**

Thanks for all the great tips. I have Alfalfa for him now and the little green cube snacks. Where is the best place to get orchard grass or oat hay? Would a feed store have it? I just hate spending $10 for a tiny bag at a pet store. I do actually have a few more toys for him, but some are in...

New to rabbits. What advice do you have for a new owner? **Pics included**

Wow! Thanks for all the great information! I don't mind the small cages if they are meat rabbits. That's different. I just feel like an animal that is going to live 5-10 years should have an optimal environment. I'll avoid HRS! The light looks like a heat light, but it's just a red bulb. My...

New to rabbits. What advice do you have for a new owner? **Pics included**

My 10 year old decided he wanted a rabbit as his very own pet. He wanted a pet that would run around the house and be litter box trained, smallish in size and friendly. Most importantly, we wanted to 'rescue' one from a shelter. A couple of months ago we set out to find our new family member...

Poultry Fly Strike...a cautionary tale with GRAPHIC photo progression.

The flies will lay eggs on the feces stuck on the chickens behinds. Buffy was my only chicken to have issues keeping clean in the vent area. Clearly, once the maggots hatch, they will eat the bird from the outside in!

    Poop Hammicks?

Recycle feed bags as poop hammocks! It works great and when they get gross, you can toss them out and start over.

    Heat control

I used to freeze the two liter plastic pop bottles in the garage fridge by day and hang them from the ceiling of the coop so they dangle on the perch..The chickens can belly up to the frozen bottles at night and they don't poop on them this way. i just slip them out of the slip knot in the...

Need some input about coop design

Linoleum will work as long as rain can't get inside. There is no drainage with it. The chickens prefer some sort of substrait (sand, shavings, etc) If it all stays dry, vinyl over wood should work well and help keep the vermin out. We had dirt floor with a skirt and the rats still dug under and...

*requesting pictures* How to keep goats out of my coop?

Our local feed store has one large coop that incorporates both goats and chickens. There is a divider in the middle, so the chickens can go in the goat half, but there are two pop doors, one inside and one to the outside so only the chickens can get into their sections. Here is a link to their...
