    Crop issue

Those are all the pics I took. Everything else looked normal based on my recollection of other hens I've culled in the past. Thank you. In that case, she had long term issues we missed.

    Crop issue

We had a ~ one-year-old hen who developed what seemed to be an impacted crop. It was enlarged, very hard and didn't go down overnight. We tried isolating her, giving ACV in her water and a soft diet. The swelling went down some but didn't go away. We thought we were going to have to cull her but...

Strange noises from my chickens every morning? NO ROOSTER???

Does the commotion happen when they lay? Ours will make noise before, during and after one of the hens lays an egg. 3 out of 5 were carrying on today. At first I was concerned about the noise level and the neighbors, but then just started laughing because they all had their own pitch so to...

Does anyone feed their chickens spent grains from beer brewing?

I have in my notes (from who knows where) that it is acceptable to give those grains to the chickens. I would make sure they still had a balanced diet with the grains, knowing that some of the nutrients are now in the beer. Otherwise, there would be nothing wrong with them so long as they are...

I feld kinda bad taking my hens first egg from her :(

I get what you mean. I feel almost like I'm stealing from the girls. Of course, that doesn't stop me from taking them but, I understand feeling bad.

    Fish "meal"

The amount of protein depends on the type of fish. I would suggest doing a Google (or other) search for "protein content of x" with x being the type of fish in your pond.

    Are your chickens "picky"...???

I've been spoiling my girls each morning with a breakfast of rolled oats (made into oatmeal, of course), a bit of yogurt and a bit of cracked corn mixed in. Occasionally, I'll add some fresh fruit chopped nice and small if I have something handy. I always use the same stainless steel bowl to...

Pullets wont eat anything but feed

I started cooking up a little oatmeal and feeding that to them every morning. They got it right away. I always feed in the same type of container and they are getting the idea to at least try what I put in there. Things that are "different" like strawberries and chopped broccoli get strange...

Do I have this right? Starter + Oats = Grower?

Try this one: http://www.prechel.net/formula/pearson.htm It actually has boxes to enter values and then does the calculation. Much easier. ;-) Also, the lionsgrip link above has lots of great information. Thanks for that!!!

    sunflower seeds ok?

And, they love them sprouted. We have been tossing them in their run (which is made of sand) and those that got buried sprouted with some recent rain and warm weather. They have been having a great time this week digging out those sprouts.

    Pop bottle waterer for hens?

I'd be concerned about the chemicals leaching out of the soda bottle. As a short term solution, maybe but I wouldn't want to run it that way long term. Victoria

No Feed For My CHICKS!! HELP PLEASE!!!

Maybe some scrambled egg? I know it is one of the things fed to young chicks if you need to increase their intake. And, the egg yolks are what they fed on initially anyway.

    Feeding Fish Scraps

I'm still pretty new to chickens as well, however, I have read on other forums where people do feed the fish remains to their chickens. One person somewhere mentioned just throwing the whole thing to the chickens (after fillets are taken off) and they will clean it up and leave what they don't...

Post pictures of your run to give me some ideas please!

Here is our coop and run. The coop is 4x6 and the run is actually 8x6 with the one covered area that is 2x6. The main run is made with 1/2" hardware cloth and there is chicken wire buried 2' deep.

    Growing feed

Quote: Has anyone successfully raised Siberian Pea Tree in the Pacific Northwest? I've read about them and how they can be a big food source for chickens but it also seems their environmental needs are not congruent with our area.

    Dandelions and chickens?

I read somewhere to give them the whole thing, including root and dirt. They will find any grubs, etc on the roots and eat all of the greens, flowers and part of the root. The rest of the root may get buried in their run (if outdoors) and grow more greens for the girls.

    Growing feed

I've been reading a lot about what could be grown for chickens for their feed. Still have a lot more research to do but here is what I've put together so far. Note, this is based off of a concept I read on an Aussie site about chickens needing greens, grains, grit and grubs. greens . living...

How do you get your chickens to come to you in the yard?

I love watching the transformation from chick to pullet to... The last time I was really around chickens, I was about 5 years old... and I'll be 50 this year, so it's all relatively new and fun!

How do you get your chickens to come to you in the yard?

What a cool picture. I wonder if its a matter of time and patience. We have four we've had from the start (now 7 weeks old) and two we got about a week ago (8 weeks old). The ones we've been around are pretty friendly but the other two are somewhat standoffish. I just talk to them when I...
