It's actually http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/vernonbychappyiness
This petition is for the town of Vernon, Ct. Residence to own and raise chickens. i feel its a learning expiernce for all, and its family oriented. chickens are fun to watch and you will also be reducing your...
Hi Katie:
Welcome to BYC and most of all welcome to Vernon. I live in the Rockville section and recently have been dealing with the Town on my chickens. I PM'd you....feel free to contact me and I can fill you in on the details of the recent push to get a clear rule on keeping chickens in...

On PMs......If you go to messages on the top bar of the page there should be a message there from me if you are signed in to BYC.
I don't think much is going on with the town. I've asked to be on a committee twice now to build this "matrix" and haven't heard anything yet. I'll be...

Thanks NightingaleJen...the support on this forum helps alot. I did submit about 10 pages of positives about chickens including bug control, fertilizer, and lessening the burden on trash hauling in our hearing a couple weeks ago as well as many others. The problem is the Health dept was...
By the way Amy....... I "PMed" you the other night giving you my contact information so that hopefully we can stay in touch and maybe get our town's regs changed for good

I cannot speak for your town but in mine the zoning regs have a specific definition of what is poultry. The regs are then silent about whether you can have them or not in my zone. As it has been explained to me a couple of times....if something is not specifically permitted then it is...

Hi Amy:
Yeah I know...I'm still bummed about it. Your chicks must be adorable!!!......they come running when they are all grown up too and it's still really cute even a year++ later. I don't think I asked before...what breeds did you get?
I feel worse for all those kids who were there...
I'm in the same boat...go for it!!! I will be making almost the same argument here in CT. Our chickens are pets, pets , PETS and very common. As long as all reasonable measures have been taken to keep the nuisance factor to a minimum.... what's the problem????
Well the anti-chicken forces prevailed at the P&Z meeting tonight even though there were HALF as many of them as there were those who supported the measure to keep 12 chickens on more than 1/2 an acre with 4 sq ft in the coop and 15 sq feet in the run and keeping the coop more than 25 feet from...

Nice Job Amy!!! I will be there tonight with my fingers crossed!!! I look forward to seeing you. I visited the planner on Monday too and he said he was going to go for 6 hens on a 1/4 acre and 12 on a half acre. He said nothing at all about putting forward a proposal to prohibit...

Hi Amy:
It was terrific to meet you the other night...you didn't need a prepared speech.... I thought you did great. I hope to get in to see the planner this week...he should start at a quarter acre not a half....otherwise many people would not be allowed to have poultry. We should...

The meeting was very long and inconclusive unfortunately. The Town Planner presented his proposed rule change and it was attacked by two board members saying chickens were dirty and the definition of poultry included birds such as emus and ostrichs.....just silly. The health dept...
Just found the Planning & Zoning Commission agenda for Thursday's meeting on the Town website. The Public hearing for Keeping poultry in on the agenda. It's at the Town Hall, 3rd floor at 7 pm on June 2nd. I hope we can get many poultry keeping supporters to come out!!!

Good morning Amy:
That is really good news. I hope the teacher will decide to speak.....I hope he does! I'm going to try to find some time this week to go in to planners office when he is there so I can talk with him too.

Absolutely agreed!!!! The hearing is now June 2nd which gives you a bit of time to do both. I hope to meet you at the hearing.
Thank you so much and most of all......

" Public Health impacts"...does that mean avian flu? I'm pasting in some excerpts from another post on here from 2008 titled their "Chicken Manifesto". I hope it helps. I sent alot of this to my town as evidence that chickens are not "dangerous" in a back yard setting. If you look it up by...
