crazy chicken hatching babies in the middle of winter!

I did not think they were meant to do that. My silkie decided to go clucky. I'm at university and didn't know but i get a message that my chicken's hatched two babies! I'm wiping ice off my windscreen every morning. How'd that happen? My mum separated her from the others really well yet she...

what age can chicks live away from with mother?

i have a silkie hen and her two chicks living outside in a run. They're 6 days old at the moment and i'd like to raise them to be really friendly. To do this, i'm thinking of taking the mother hen away when they're old enough to survive on their own. I live in Australia so they're need to be...

    I feel like crying.

i'm so sorry, that's awful it's normal to feel sad about things like that, death isn't nice; it doesn't matter what kind of animal it is. I once tried to c-section a chick out of its egg because i didn't know how to set them all at the same time and they developed at different rates therefore...

a silkie rooster with a red face!

haha thanks guys. I paid for a rooster off a family friend who deals for our area, but that one (a beautiful boy) died so this bloke was a free replacement. I really didn't expect much more; i think the poor little thing's gunna be in a lot of trouble once i find a breeding quality black silkie...

    behaviour indicative of silkie sex?

i have some 5-and-a-half week-old silkie chicks and two of them seem to really enjoy sparring with eachother. It's always this pair as far as i can tell. They fluff up their feather and run at eachother, legs out for scratching and wings flapping. There's also a lot of hopping and sizing each...

a silkie rooster with a red face!

i brought a silkie rooster that has a red face. it's ugly as anything so i don't think i'll keep this particular one for breeding but i was wondering, it wouldn't be pure silkie if it has red skin, right? it has 5 toes, black skin in other places and the fluff overload so there's silkie in there...

    behaviour indicative of silkie sex?

i have some 5 and a half week old silkie chicks and i've noticed a pair of them particularly enjoy fighting with eachother. They fluff up their feather and run at eachother with their legs trying to scratch and their wings out flapping. It's almost always this particular pair of them. I'm...

Will a Crushed egg hatch? *STILL ALIVE!*HATCHING!

that's one tough blood line! two little fighters. very glad i found this thread, clever little darlings they are! i had a 100% (6/6) clutch of silkie eggs hatch under a broody last week after being shipped across the country (australia, a big county!) they got heatwaved, flooded and one rolled...

    Buff Orpingtons/Barred Rock

i have a barred rock rooster who is friendlier than his little BR girlfriend (though she is bullied by the Isa Brows so she's a nervous wreck) and the Isa Browns. He follows me around the yard, knowing i have no food, just wanting to sticky beak and be near me. He'll let me pat him, but he...

    chick born 3 days early!

GAH! so excited. my clever little silkie girl hatched her first baby today, 3 days before i was expecting! We've had some shockingly hot days (Australia) which i think would speed it up a bit; they went under her in the late afternoon so i timed from the day after, but still! 3 days early makes...

    Fragile eggs to incubate???

hmm... i can't say i know anything about fragile yolks affects on egg haching. But i thought i'd wish you luck anyway! I'd say you'd almost certainly get a couple out of them, even if they're not quite perfect for hatching. Give 'er a whirl and let us know how they go!

    This is too funny!!

haha! i'm in the exact same situation. i hatch with broody hens, and it's my mum who sighs every time i get new fertile eggs because it's her that will be left with them once i'm at university next year! she loves them though! i've seen her snuggling PintSize (my cutsie-pie silkie pullet).

Let the little ones into the run?

we're having some minor flooding here and my power was off for a while so i've been slack with my email. big news; mum's abandoned her babies, so they're on their lonesome now. The others still leave them alone. I actually saw one of them up on the top perch with the other hens, it shuffles...

    Which is the friendliest?

i have a pair of young barred rocks; a rooster and a pullet. They are absolutely adorable! the rooster is more friendly than the isa brown girls in there! they are intelligent birds and terrible sticky beaks! they follow me around right on my heels to see what i have/what i'm doing/what's going...

how do hens naturally change the humidity of their eggs?

eggs need different humidity ranges at different parts of development, how do hens change and maintain this? also, if a hen had been clucky for a week or so before eggs were put under her, would she still know when to change the humidity or would the eggs just have to deal with what they get...

    Black silkies

i have a little black silkie girl named PintSize, she's just gorgeous! this is a photo taken around Christmas when she was just tiny. She's a bit bigger now, but still a chick really. i'd love to get a decent black silkie rooster for her, i love how pretty the black ones are!! nothing would...

I'm thinking about buying Banty babies. Thoughts on this smaller bird?

i have some little silkie that i absolutely love! they're so friendly, they all come over for a cuddle when i go in there for feed them. Personally, i think they lay really yummy eggs, i'd rather eat one of their eggs than a laying birds one, they taste very buttery and sweet and are SO cute...
