    Bay Area BYCers!

Hello everyone, I'm looking to add some new chickens to my flock sometime soon. I live in Oakland and right now I have a couple Delawares and Silver Laced Wyandottes. I just completed a small A-frame/triangular coop and am looking to get some chicks or younger chickens in the next couple weeks...

    Vent problem?

Thanks for your reply! It seems like the vent has gone down in inflammation. And seems slightly less red. I'm just worried about her pecking at it and not letting it get better. The only thing I'm worried about is her rear end drying out. It has started to darken in color and shrink, almost as...

    Are these Delewares?

neither of those chickens seem to be deleware's to me. and i've got 8 fine specimens to rely on. the barring on the second chicken is way to abundant to be a deleware. unless it's not fully deleware or a really bad strain. my girls look like this.

Thanks for the replies! Quote: Hey! Nice to see another Oaklander here too! We're in East Oakland near the Coliseum. I would love to take some wooden eggs from you. We raise our own mealworms and feed them regularly, we would be more than happy to supply you with some in exchange? Yeah...

one of my hens this morning seemed to be having a problem laying. -she seemed stressed and kept clucking like crazy. i went outside more than once thinking something had gotten after them because of the noise she was making. it turns out i guess she was just trying to find the right spot to...

Some Laws for San Francisco Bay Area

Living in the Bay Area and knowing others on here probably keep or want to keep chickens, I though I'd post some links to the laws in the area. Most are County laws and some local city laws. San Francisco City and County Alameda County City of Oakland City of Berkeley (Opens in PDF) San...

    Any City Slickers???

We live in the city, in a duplex. Downtown San Francisco is a 20 minute drive and I'm surrounded by multi-story apartment buildings on 2 sides. Being the 44th largest city in the US with a population near half a million. We grow all the produce we need, raise our own chickens, can and freeze...

The Supreme Court's Gun Ruling This Week - Not A Debate

Quote: True some murders are happening by being in the wrong place at the wrong time but too many are drug related. Gangs really don't exist largely in Oakland as in other parts of the country. It's more of a drug turf relation here. The biggest problem isn't the guns but the drugs. Quote...

The Supreme Court's Gun Ruling This Week - Not A Debate

Quote: Do you have a link to that info? I'm perusing the FBI crime data for 2005, and they state 14,860 total homicides for 2005. I can't find where they're broken down by weapon type, but it's interesting to note that the most "popular" circumstances are: Robbery, juvenile gang killings and...

The Supreme Court's Gun Ruling This Week - Not A Debate

I have a mixed opinion when it comes to gun ownership and possession I completely agree that it is amongst our government given right as a free people to own guns and use them to protect our self, family and home. I live in a high crime area. In 2007 Oakland has 127 homicides in which all but 22...

    What should i Get???

Great job in convincing your hubby to get chickens! We have 8 Delaware hens and they're about 19 weeks old and we absolutely love them. They are very friendly and very docile which is good because we didn't handle them probably as much as we should have when they were growing up. We don't...

    It Has Begun!!!

One of the best ways to control adult Japanese Beetles is to get them while they're young! The larvae of the Japanese Beetle love to live in lawns and other moist expanses of vegetation. Because of this there are a few options in controlling them. Commercially available beneficial nematodes can...

    How high?

Our delawares can barely make it up to about 4 feet. The 6 week old silver laced though have cleared about 6. The older they get the heavier they're going to be especially obvious if they're heavy breeds. We have netting over the top of their run both for safety and just in case they learn to...

First Coop...Work In Progress (pic heavy)

Quote: The roof does have a slight incline for whatever rain we may ever get but that's not too much of a concern. We are painting this weekend. We just had to get them out there. Quote: Yeah, they love it. We've put up a pvc/wire fence between them and the garden and they love to look...
