Thanks for your help folks. I'm a little bummed the Rock will not be giving me the pretty browner eggs but I have two Welsummers who will! Also - the Rock is so pretty I can't really be too disappointed :o)

Sold as Welsummers but look different...

So I got both these girls from a lady who buys from Meyer Hatchery. Don't know if they are good or bad - just giving info. They had the same hatch day (3/6/2013). They look so different. Especially the size of comb but also the feathering. Are they the same breed?

    High Desert, California!!

Hey Nikki, We haved lived in Joshua Tree for the past four years having come from Western Washington where I lived for 40 years. Our kids are all still up there and actually LOVING this heat wave after the terrible spring you all just had. I am happy for them but worried for any pet owners...

Our first whopper - bottomed out the scale!

She's a Barred Rock. That was the only giant one. Her last two were just at large on the scale.

Our first whopper - bottomed out the scale!

I just feed them layer pellets but give them as much greens as possible. The heaviest marked is extra large at 2.5oz. This egg was 3.1oz. Pretty cool though :o)

So much for instinct - eggs all over the coop and pen

I'm having a bit of the same issue. One of my girls has decided to fly up to the poop board (3 feet up) and clear away the shavings to lay her eggs. This has only been since she has been through her moult. Weird.

All's well here in Joshua Tree too. My girls won't leave the run but for a quick dart out then back in again. The rain they'll stand out in but the wind they just don't like
