This is my fifth year raising chickens. I have 27 dominique breeders, 21 rhode island red breeders, 12 buff orpinton breeders, 4 frizzle cochin breeders and 18 silkie breeders. I have never had a chicken molt. My roosters will lose their sickle feathers, but never a bare bird. I feed nutrena...
In Roseville Illinois on highway 67. LOL, I am getting ready to go into the family room and ask my husband if we can drive 360 miles one way to pick up 2 roosters. Chuckles.
50+ head June hatch Dominique Pullets. I culled hard this year, these are the top 50%. Lay a large brown egg, Dominiques are extremely hardy. America's oldest breed, this breed was reduced to about 300 head in the early 70's. Thanks to a group of enthusiasts this breed is making a stong...
I have a dominique rooster that is two, raised by hand, played with all the time, feed him mealy worms. He comes running when he sees me. Then when I turn my back, bam, he attacks me. So I pick him up and give him the hold treatment. Kinda of time out for chickens. LOL. I hold him for about 4 or...
hi,
just made this a month or so ago. I started with one of the 4 shelf units from Menards, cost me about $70. Gave the chipboard shelves a good coat of paint.before assembly. When I go out to do chores this afternoon I will take a few pics for you. The cages are fairly easy to sew, the bottom...
I needed one with lots of capacity. This is a heavy duty shelf unit that I purchased for $70. I added lights made from broken 4 ft florescent, added the incandescent screw in fixtures for two bulbs per shelf. 8 cages made from 1/2 inch hardware cloth, Made plywood litter trays (haven't painted...
Very docile hens, roos are like any breed, at times can be aggressive, but generally very sweet. Great layers and are soooo sweet. They jump up and down when they see me coming with the feed bucket. But need extra attention when it comes to shelter, predators, they don't have tons of 'survival'...
Easy to care for, strickingly attractive in large groups because of their uniform color / barring. Great mamas, super friendly, talkitive, but roos can be a handful during breeding because of their size.
sorry guys, I have been flat on my back except for chores for three days, I'm back now! Worst sinus cold infection, whatever you call it, perhaps the crud that I have ever had. I will check on shipping for everyone tomorrow.
just sitting back being patient. LOL. I will wait until Sunday afternoon to candle, then probably only a few. This is my first go with the Sportsman 1502, not real confident as all my eggs were pullets that had just started laying with new roos. Will start another 30 eggs on this Sunday. I hope...
Just starting my first hatch with my new 1502. The book says during the first 18 days the water pan is sufficient, and during the hatch add one wick. With no wick I am riding between 30 and 35% with a wick 46 to 48%. I have no plugs removed. Do I up the humidity during the first 18 days or go...
okay, I'll in! Neighbor stopped by this morning wanting some hatching eggs, so my numbers and breeds changed. Officially it's 3 buff orpingtons, 6 dominiques, 8 cochin frizzles and 11 bantam rhode island reds. Will increase by a couple when I go thru the hen house at 5pm. Yah! And what a group...
Grrr. Had a bug, literally in the tube from the holding bucket to the humidity tray. Now I have water, humidity has gone from 18% to 30% in 5 minutes. Temperature perfect at 99.8. If the humidity jumps here in the next hour or so to where I want it I will be starting 30 eggs. I try not to get...
No I don't, I work in Macomb so I tend to navigate south. Used to have a friend that worked at Cat but he retired. I don't know anybody that currently works there.
I got a dozen of your eggs last year, 7 hatched. They are absolutely the sweetest animals alive. As soon as I come in the hen house they run to see me, jump up and down waiting for me to feed them.
