Just got my buff orps yesterday, and they're doing well. Funny to see them nod off .... one nodded off into the water with her beak and them promptly jerked her head up and drank a little....too funny.

I'm wanting to start raising chickens. I've done some research and decided to go with Buff Orpingtons - quiet, docile, good layers, and pretty. We'd like to raise them from chicks - I know no eggs for first few months. Anything I definitely need to know before starting - live in southern IN.

I don't know a ton about chickens, but putting a little olive oil (not much just a tablespoon or so) on the top of the water in the barrel will keep larvae out - it forms a film on the top of the water. Just don't let the whole thing dry out, and make sure that the spigot is an inch or two from...
