how can i get my hens to stop eating eggs??

I find that they always give the egg a little poke after they lay it. If it cracks, then they keep going. On the other hand, if something gets their attention they run out of the nest box as quickly as possible to see what it is and that distracts from the egg poking. My hens have taken to doing...

    time of day for eggs

Until daylight savings time kicked in, my girls used to be so regular I could set my clock to chicken time. Now I get eggs anywhere from 9-11:00am. No afternoon layers in this flock. when the new chicks come online, I hope they will follow the cycle the other girls have set.

Lead levels in eggs -- how to test and what is safe?

Thanks for the link to the study. Since chickens are much smaller than humans, then they must be absorbing more of the lead. I will definitely try using the eggshells instead of the oyster shells. Bad timing for me, I just bought 20 lbs of oyster shells last weekend. I guess if the egg shells...

Lead levels in eggs -- how to test and what is safe?

I wasn't aware about the oyster shell and lead linkages. I guess I could give the hens dairy as a lead free calcium source. I checked with the county extension lab and they quoted me parts per billion as lead levels that were cautionary. My guess is that the lead levels should be much lower than...

What breed is this little fuzzybutt

She looks like one of my little Ameraucana's. I thought mine was a RIR until the stripes on the wings started to come out when she was 5 days old.

Thanks so much!! That blogpost was very helpful. I've had the spoil tested but don't trust the guidelines set by the EPA. I'll get the eggs tested asap and then decide next steps.

Lead levels in eggs -- how to test and what is safe?

Thanks for the suggestion about checking with a vet. I live in an area where the only animals the vets take care of are dogs and cats. I'llhave to take a long drive to find a coutnry vet who might be bale to do it. I'll call around.

    Bees?

I'm going to install a bee hive soon too. I wouldn't put the chickens near the hive because it might cause a swarm. You could put black, weed blocking garden fabric underneath the hive so that you didn't have to do a lot of lawn maintenance near it. I'm elevating my hive on cinder blocks that...

Lead levels in eggs -- how to test and what is safe?

Hi all -- new poster here. I've been the proud owner of 2 RIRs since November and will add 8 more chicks to the flock tomorrow. I found out that my neighbor's former garage, which was taken down recently, had lead paint on it. The garage was 18 inches from property line, without a fence, where...
