We had a low in the mid thirties this past week. A bit further north, it was 34. I'm sure my girls won't like the winter as much as I do, this will be their first!
I used a PVC greenhouse (modified some) for my run. Being in central WI, I too needed something for the snow. It was cheap and easy. Just do a search on line for PVC greenhouse plans.
Be sure to clean your chickens feet afterward, [wet] cement is corrosive. My run is all sand. If yours is, tou could smooth an area and let them walk through it, then make a mold. You can buy mold kits at craft stores.
My ramp is a 2X6, Its about 4'long and ends on a cement block (it saves me about three feet of ramp length). From the door it drops from 30" down to 16". I also use wood strips for traction. The girls like to perch on it throughout the day, and I hang a waterer under it (easy to access and easy...

I also collect my eggs from the outside for many of the same reasons. My coop is smaller and I didn't want to lose the floor space. I still talk to my girls daily (actually multiple time throughout the day). I usually bring them treats and fresh water when i check for eggs, they come...
Mine also seemed bored. They have plenty of room, get a ton of protein so I attributed it to boredom. My wife is making saddles (all six peck feather off each other, only one is peck free). Anyway we also picked up a large pecking block, and it seems to be working. My wife is going ahead with...
My girls have been laying since the forth of July. Now I regularly collect six eggs a day and since last Saturday, three different times I collect seven (from six hens). One one my tetras lays double yokers on a fairly regular basis also. Bonus!

I had an aqquaintance "who grew up around chickens" what swore the same thing about needing a rooster. Dozens of eggs later, he hasn't brought it up any more. He is quick to throw out all kinds of advice about almost any subject, most of it starts out: "I heard that..."
Mine are funny. They don't peck me at all (unless there is a button on my shorts that gets their attention). They peck at my wife all the time. The other day she was cutting through the yard, and I heard her (Ooh! Hey! Aah! Hey!!!!) it was funny because the cadence of her voice almost sounded...
I never thought raising chickens would be so addicting. I started with three day old pullets in March. It has been quite edcational, fun and relaxing all at the same time. My wife enjoys them as much as I do. My six girls have been doing really well and seem content. They have been averaging six...
I had a wire floor in my brooder. It worked well. I framed the wire floor in sections so I could remove them easily. In my coop, I also have a linoleum covered floor with shavings. It cleans easily. Because of the size of my coop, I didn't want a wire floor, it would have been way too cumbersome...
Looking at your coop, are you planning on putting a people door on the left side? I would hinge it like a regular door. I would also consider making the door taller to prevent you from having to stoop over to get in or out. The design looks good though.
I'm sorry also. I am an animal lover and go to great lengths to protect them (just last week I heared someone's alpacas back to their farm. They were nearly a mile away. I recognized them and knew where they belonged. The lady had no idea how the escaped the pocked pen). I have no heartburn...
Hi Jim, I have six birds in a 4X6 coop. Most folks that build tractors (mobile chicken coops/ runs) find the to be cumbersome once they finish building a coop large enough for their birds. There are several designs floating around here, there are some that are sectional that make it easier to...
