That is a great idea. I do keep mine with some hens, I like to hatch chicks from time to time, but I think the ladies are the reason my two problem guys are so defensive.
I have a rain barrel I set up to water my cold frame plants a couple of years ago. I used a pickle barrel and attached a hose spout. I don't have a faucet down at the coop/run, so I have to run a 100ft hose from the house. I sometimes use the water from the barrel to top off the chicken's water...
Anyone ever fed Rooster Booster Feed. I was at my local Southern States feed store today talking with the employees. I mentioned I don't have a lot of eggs because the hens are molting. One guy said he was completely out of Rooster Booster feed. Apparently he sells a lot to chicken owners during...
I used leaf mulch and straw bales to make a potato bed last year. It worked out well. After I dug the potatoes I set up my portable run around it and let the hens have at it. Within days they had it scattered out and ready to till under. No adverse side effects from it. So I was also thinking of...
I have found that my later season hens (those who start laying in Sept, Oct) are more likely to take longer to get going than ones who begin to lay in July/Aug. On a bright note the Late Ladies from last year layed some eggs all winter.
I had a hen hatch chicks in a nesting box. My nesting boxes are large (really to large, thanks to the FIL) so I cover the entrance with hardware cloth as soon as I saw the first chick. I gave the hen food and water. As soon as they all hatched I moved them to a separate pen. I was afraid the...
My DH is the one who started the whole chicken thing at our farm. We both grew up on farms, but he had never had chickens. We always had a few chickens when I was growing up. Then one day some friends showed him and the kids their new pullets they were raising. Next thing I know we have 12...
Better call the wildlife, he is about to make a name for himself I believe. Here in N.C. he would have the entire state chasing him, cops, state troopers, wildlife officals, John Q Public, all the news crews! He wouldn't have time to steal any chickens! LOL
mickey328, I make chickenstew for my husbands fishing trip to the Outer Banks, N.C. At first they were worried about transporting it, and since they only have cooler w/ice out there, keeping it from spoiling.I told them I would freeze it in a cake icing bucket and they would have no problem...
Sorry to hear that these people didn't hold up their end of the deal.Looking forward to seeing the results of your hard work. Around my area there are alot of folks who get into livestock way over their heads, and the result is animals in bad condition. I am asked constantly to take in animals...
I think to put them in the position to be picked off by predators is way more cruel than penning them up. I have some portable fencing I use when I can be around the house all day, but I make sure they are in the run when I cant be.Where I live this is the only way to keep them off the menu.They...
