What a difference a day makes!!!

Things seem to have settled down throughout the day. I was a little concerned at first, but I guess they are just figuring things out. I guess this is why the boys don't grow spurs until the get the hang of things, so to speak. I hope this is a sign eggs are on the way.

What a difference a day makes!!!

So up until yesterday our little flock had fallen into the routine of peacefully roaming around the woods, eating and following me to see what I was doing. I would let them out in the morning and they would come out one by one and eat scratch grain at my feet. In the evening they would come home...

How to get them to lay in their nest boxes?

Thanks! That was quick and helpful! I guess I have to find some fake eggs or golf balls. I wasn't overly concerned just yet, but a few of the ladies are getting a little red in the face. Five of them are RSLs and I had heard that they tend to lay pretty early. The other three definite pullets...

How to get them to lay in their nest boxes?

I have 8/9 pullets (not sure about on yet) and one rooster. All are a about 17 weeks old. They free-range, completely unrestricted around our wooded three acre lot all day. They all stick together and follow the rooster around. In the evening, I shut them in their coop after they have gone to...

    Rooster Questions????????

So this spring we started our first flock of chickens. They are now about 11 to 12 weeks old. We have 10 total and it looks like two are roos. We are raising these birds for eggs, so I don't mind having two roosters around as long as it doesn't cause problems, so far it hasn't. I also don't mind...

    The Sussex thread!

I have a question about sex linked traits of the SS. First off do the pullets or roos of this breed feather first? Are there any other things I should be looking for to determine gender? I have 3 that are about 4 weeks old and one is significantly larger than other two and the big one has a...

2 questions about some 4 week old chicks

Thanks for all the help. You guys have supported my theories on gender and breed. One last question. Do Speckled Sussex roos or pullets feather first? I thought pullets always feathered first, but I read somewhere that it is different from breed to breed.

2 questions about some 4 week old chicks

Question #1 I have pictures here of my Barred Plymouth Rock, and of 2 of my Speckled Sussex. The BPR and the one SS got feathers way faster than the other SS and they are much bigger. What sex do you think I have here? BPR SS#1 SS#2 Question #2 I have 5 chicks that I bought from TSC...

    New

Hello, I live in rural upstate NY and I just got my first ten chicks a couple weeks ago. I got 1 Barred Plymouth Rock, 3 Speckled Sussex, 1 White Leghorn pullet, and 5 Red pullets (not sure of the specific breed or breeds). I'm looking forward to read and learning on this forum. Thanks, Dan
