I read somewhere that if it is completely dark, the chickens sleep like rocks and are less likely to get away from predators. They say to add a night light so the chickens are asleep, but are still aware if something enters the coop.
I have four 3 week olds that are in a converted dog kennel with a second story. They climb the "ladder" to the next level and look over the edge to see who isn't paying attention, and then pounce on them! They just have to find ways to amuse themselves.
